Working on a presentation for a local history class, I came across a couple of random photographs of Scottish Regiment headstones at 2 war cemeteries in France, Guemappe British Cemetery and Brown's Copse Cemetery near Roeux.
Both cemeteries have a higher than usual incidence of Scottish graves within them - given the large Scottish presence at the battle of Arras in April - May 1917, but even so, I found myself reflecting on what a sacrifice this tiny, magnificent country of Scotland made in the Great War.

THE ALYTH GUARDIAN: 15.06.17
Private Robert Ferguson, Black Watch (youngest son of Mrs Ferguson, 16 Bank Street), was killed in action on 23rd April.
Mrs Ferguson had first received word that her son was wounded but later official intimation came that he was killed.
Pvt. Ferguson, who was 21 years of age, was a ploughman with Mr Graham, Burnside, when he joined the Scottish Horse on 30th May 1916. He was transferred to the Black Watch and sent to the Front five months ago. He had no furlough since going abroad, and previous to his fatal day had passed through severe fighting scatheless. His eldest brother, who was quartered close by him, heard that he was wounded, but afterwards heard of his death. He has also two brothers-in-law serving with the colours.

Ali,
Guemappe is one of my particular favourite cemeteries - with possibly one of the highest percentage of Scots buried in it than any other cemetery.

I took a bus full of Hawick folk there 4 years ago to remember Gilbert Taylor of the 8th Bn. Seaforths who lies there - and to remember Robert Telfer of the 9th Bn. Black Watch who was killed somewhere in the vicinity but who has no known grave.
