Hi Everyone ,

I am glad that I came accross this project . I have been researching my great uncle who was born and raised in Scotland . He died as a POW in the Changi Prison Camp in Singapore .

What I was wondering is if Scotland has a memorial for men that were born in Scotland but died as POW's . Also, I don't know if it would make a difference that when he enlisted into the Royal Engineers he was living in Luton, England at the time .

Here is his information in case someone knows if he is on a memorial .

Michael Joseph Flanigan b. 19 Mar 1917 in Craigneuk,Wishaw , Scotland

Served - Unit - 288 Field Company , Royal Engineers
Rank - Driver
Service # 2003239

Status - Deceased POW WWII Singapore

Death - 7 May 1942 . Michael was buried at Kranji War Cemetery in Singapore .

I would appreciate any information .
Thank you,
Megan

Welcome Megan, there is no memorial particular to those who died as POWs as far as I know. The main Wishaw memorial has no names and I have not found him on any other Wishaw memorial.

He is of course listed on the Scottish National War Memorial http://www.snwm.org/

David McNay knows this geographic area best so PM him in a day or two if he does not reply to this post.

Hello Paul,

Thank you for replying to my post. Also, a big thank you for telling me about the Scottish War Memorial .

I live in the states so I had no idea about this place. Thank you for telling me and I am at least happy that his name is on their rolls.

I will be sending away for the certificates from that site .

Thank you again,

Megan

Craigneuk is in a way part of Wishaw. However, they both have war memorials.

Unfortunately.....neither of them has any names for WW2. Wishaw only recently in the last 20 years or so erected a memorial for WW2. I'm not sure if the Craigneuk memorial even mentions WW2.

However....I know there are plans afoot for a new memorial in Craigneuk. I'm not sure if the intention is just to add names to the existing memorial in some way, or if the plan is for a completely new memorial, but I think the intention is to include names.

There was a meeting several months ago but I was unable to attend. I will try and make some enquiries for you.

Hi David ,

I would greatly appreciate any information that you can find out about a memorial . If they do add names I would really like to make sure that my great uncle was included .

Living in the States , it has been hard to find out anything about his death , so at least I can try to have his name remembered .

Thank you,
Megan

Hello Adam,

Thank you for posting all of Michael's information for me . I do hope that he will be recognized in some form along with the rest of the POWs .

Michael was named after his Uncle a Michael McGrory who was born in Ireland . Unfortunately Michael McGrory would succumb to war also .

He died in 1918 in WWI , he is buried in Kezelberg Cemetery, West Vlaanderen , Belgium . Michael Flanigan was only a yr old at the time.

2 Michaels, lost in 2 wars, buried in different corners of the world . I just want to make sure they aren't forgotten .

Thank you everyone for all your help and advice,
Megan
