I don't know anything about this book, just saw a reference to it in yesterday's Sunday Post.

Paul,

You tease! I could find nothing relating to this on The Sunday Post website nor 'googling'.

Is there anything else?

sorry, it was the last item in the 'can you do me a favour?' section. Full item reads..........

Having difficulty tracing a book entitled The Morayshire Roll of Honour 1914 - 1918, published in 1921. J Mackenzie, 10 Seaforth Road, Forres, IV36 1BE

I guess it might be worth dropping them a line to see if they have had any luck.

And so do I (well a photocopy). I thought it had already been mentioned before on the forum.

It's a very good R-o-H. The whole county was involved and it was organised through the local police stations. A standard form was handed out and everyone who served and had someone to fill in a form for them was included. I can't find an exact number of men and womed listed but 7,500 forms were filled in.

Here's a couple of examples

ADAM, Alexander Russell
Lieut. 60th Squadron R.F.C. born Darliston, Elgin, 4th July 1895; joined Elgin 1915 3/6th Seaforths, and afterwards attached RFC-Pilot's Certificate; served in france; first reported missing 5th July 1917, then on 22nd Sept. was reported killed in action in Air Service July 3rd 1917, four miles within German lines, somewhere in Flanders. Son of william Gordon Adam, 24 Hay Street, Elgin and K.E. Russell or Adam. Occupation, bank accountant

CUMMING, James
No. 225155 Pte., 10th Lovat Scouts, attached Cameron Highlanders; born at Cromdale, Oct 27th 1891; joined at Beauly, Nov. 1914; served in Gallipoli, Egypt, salonica and France. Son of David and Robina Grant Cumming, faebuie, Cromdale. Occupation, painter

If anyone wanted to research any of the Morayshire war memorials they should find all the Great War names in this book.

Just joined this site today and found this!

James Cumming is one of mine!

Adam, can you tell me which memorial this is?

I can then visit the next time I am in Scotland.

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean

Welcome to the forum. This is not an actual memorial, it is a book, please see previous posts in the thread. But your man could well be on one (or more) of the memorials, just a matter of searching through (or put a post in the requests section).

Jean,

The Morayshire Family History Sharing website suggests that those from Cromdale would be on the Grantown-on-Spey War Memorial - James Cumming does not appear to be listed. I couldn't find him on CWGC either - did he die during the war?

Hello Paul and Roxy

Thanks for replying.

I had already looked at the Memorial in Grantown on a visit there last year and found no one from our family.

I don't know what happened to James Cumming. I had only traced him as far as the 1901 census. When I found him mentioned on this site, I assumed he had died in the war. On re reading the posts perhaps he didn't!

Best wishes
Jean

Jean

Jas Cumming survived the conflict and his service ended on 9th April 1919. He went overseas in Sept 1915, originally 3369 Lovat Scouts.

He died at Grantown age 78 on 28 Dec 1969.

Hope this assists.

Just checked and Jas Cumming's service record is on Ancestry. As I have a subscription, if anyone wants it, just send me a PM.

I stumbled across two copies of this book for sale on Amazon.
A touch on the pricey side at £700 and £800 !?!

Where do they get these fugures from? They'll surely never sell at such a ludicrous price will they?
