OS map ref NT493145

The Hawick municipal Roll of Honour is located next to Hawick War Memorial in Wilton Lodge museum.
It consists of highly elaborate hand painted scrolls housed in double sided wooden cabinets.
It remembers the 692 Hawick casualties from the Great War and 122 from the Second.
The Roll of Honour of the Burgh of Hawick was unveiled by Provost Renwick in the Wilton Lodge Museum on November, 11th, 1923, five years after the end of the war. It comprised the names of 692 men who had fallen in the service of 60 different regiments during the war. The names were listed on 8 pages of illuminated vellum encased in a stand of oak. Photographs of the separate pages were made available for purchase at a price of 2 shillings each.

The following soldier is named on this roll of honour.

ROSE, John Carson Private 515 1st/4th Bn King's Own Scottish Borderers
Born: Belfast, Co Antrim Resided: Hawick, Roxburgh Resided: Hawick.
Age: 23 Date of Death: 12/07/1915 Cause: Killed in action.
Family Notes: Son of, the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Henry Rose, of Whitewell, Belfast.
Other notes: Private Rose’s Medal Index Card shows him as entering the Gallipoli Theatre of Operations on 4/6/1915; the Index Card also shows him as “MPD 12/7/1915 (Missing Presumed Dead).
Special Notes: Private Rose is listed on the IWM records as “killed in action, Dardanelles; July 12, 1915.”
Grave/Memorial: Panel 84 to 92 or 220 to 222. Helles Memorial.
Other memorials: Private Rose is named in the Scottish Roll of Honour in the Scottish National War Memorial, Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh; he is also named in the Hawick Municipal Roll of Honour which is housed in Wilton Lodge Museum, Hawick.

Private (6762) GEORGE EDWIN CLARKE HUNTER "B" Company 5th Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) died on 24 August 1916 and is buried in Thistle Dump Cemetery, High Wood, Longueval, France.
His father, James, was the Post Master at Hawick, a post he had previously held in Newton Stewart, Penninghame Parish, Wigtownshire where George was born in 1896 to James and his first wife Mary Elizabeth Clarke. George was working in the commercial department of a shipping company in Glasgow when he enlisted.
