Greenside Parish Church War Memorials, Edinburgh
Regent Road
Edinburgh

There are quite a few war memorials in this building to several local churches which merged together over the years and are now combined to form the congregation at Greenside.

The Greenside Parish Church war memorials take the form of a stained glass window behind the altar and four marble plaques in the entrance hall.

I have not got an image of the church here yet. It was another lovely rainy day in Edinburgh today. I will wait until it is a nice day to get a good image of the church and replace this text with the photograph.

It's a beautiful church inside, well kept and lovely and bright with several very impressive stained glass windows. It is nice to see a church that takes so much pride in all its war memorials. Not only are the they prominently displayed they even have photographs of the memorials if they don't have the originals.

When I went to get the photographs today all the church officers and members of the congragtion I spoke to were very helpful. They even tried to find a key to open a glass cabinet which had been closed for years. It was a pleasure to visit such a friendly church.

Although this plaque isn't a war memorial it is one of the personal memorial within the nave and I thought it worth posting out of interest.

All three brothers were the sons of Robert Stevenson and Thomas was the father of RLS.

The stained glass windows. From the inscriptions it looks like only the central window is the war memorial. I'm afraid I was unable to use the flash on the camera within the nave so the images are a bit blurred.

From “The Scotsman” 21st February 1921

GREENSIDE (Edinburgh) Parish Church

Yesterday the Rev. Professor Paterson dedicated a window and memorial tablets erected in the vestibule of the church to the memory of the seventy-two men of the congregation who fell in the war. The subject of the window was The Resurrection, and was designed by Mr Ballantine.
Professor Paterson said that, as a representative of the bereaved families, he wished to express their appreciation of the storied window and the marble tablets that would keep in honour the names of their beloved dead for many generations. It tempered their grief to reflect that those men could not have done otherwise than rally to the defence of their country in the hour of its deadly peril.
It was also no small consolation to know that the cause for which they fell had been crowned with an overwhelming victory, which broke in pieces the formidable Empire that had menaced the liberties of Europe and meditated the ruin of Great Britain. Nor had they lost faith in an overruling Providence, or lost the hope that, in spite of painful impressions to the contrary, the harvest from their labours and sacrifices would be reaped in a better, a happier, and a nobler world.
The memorials in bronze and marble were the shadows of a greater memorial, whose foundations had been laid by their hands and cemented by their blood.
