SIR WILLIAM DOUGLAS KCB/ THIS MONUMENT IS ERECTED/ BY HIS BROTHER OFFICERS OF THE 91ST OR ARGYLLSHIRE REGIMENT/ AS A TRIBUTE OF THEIR RESPECT AND ESTEEM/ FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICES IN THE FIELD/ AND AMIABLE QUALITIES IN PRIVATE LIEF/ HE FELL AN EARLY VICTIM OF THE DUTIES OF HIS PROFESSION/ AT VALENCENNES IN FRANCE/ ON 23RD AUGUST 1818 AGED 42 YEARS/ UNIVERSALLY RESPECTED BY THE ARMY AND ALL WHO KNEW HIM |
