THE GORDON HIGHLANDERS

Quote:
"undoubtedly they are the finest regiment in the world."
Winston S. Churchill

This memorial was unveiled in 2000 to commemorate the 200 year existence ( 1794-1994 ) of the Gordon Highlanders and it's links to Huntly following the regiment's unpopular demise due to government cuts. The regiment was established here and the memorial is set in the grounds of The Gordon Schools is a reproduction of their famous Bydand regimental badge.

The avenue which passes under the archway of the original schools building leads to the former home of the Duke and Duchess of Gordon.

The Gordon Highlanders were amalgamated with the Queen’s Own Highlanders (Seaforth and Camerons) at Dreghorn Barracks on 17th September 1994 to form The Highlanders (Seaforth, Gordons and Camerons) and this amalgamated regiment continued to carry on the traditions of all these three old regiments (And the five pre-1881 numbered regiments). They wore the cap-badge of the QOHldrs and the kilt of the Gordons for example.

I believe there is a plaque commemorating the meeting of the two regiments on 14th September 1994 on Craigellachie Bridge. The river at Craigellachie marked the boundary between the two regiment’s recruiting areas before 1994.

In 2006 1st Bn The Highlanders became The Highlanders, 4th Bn The Royal Regiment of Scotland when all the Scottish Infantry regiments amalgamated into the super regiment. As much as possible this unit tries to perpetuate the memory of its former regiments so although The Gordon Highlanders as a unique regiment disappeared in 1994 it didn’t disband like the Cameronians did in 1968 and its traditions still live on in 4 SCOTS.
