Thanks Adam - I can now see 4 more photos than I could yesterday, I seem to be having a problem with photos from Photobucket - I only see a few unless I hit refresh and then a few more, sometimes several times. Anyone else having this problem looking at previously posted photos?

I found this image on e-bay. It's from a postcard which was lying on a table when photographed which explains the squint look. It shows the memorial before the new road bridge was built in 1935.

After a talk I gave on the memorial a few weeks ago I have had a little bit more information from locals on what arrangements were in place for Remembrance ceremonies in Brora before the clock tower was built.

The first was on the night of the talk when someone (and I'm afraid I spoke to so many folk I can't remember who it was) told me that there was a cross in Station Square which was the focus for remembrance.

Local historian Hugh Baillie also passed on to me via my mother that a local man named Ackroyd set up a memorial garden during the war. This was opposite the station, and from what I've been told it was the opposite side of the railway from Station Square, probably on what is now Victoria Crescent. This may tie in with a vacant plot at this spot which was the site of the former Railway Hotel. This hotel had burned down before the war and was not rebuilt.

After the war the same Mr Ackroyd offered to pay for a plot of land on Braambury Hill (aka Brambury Hill) - OS Ref. NC 895 049. This is the nearest hill to Brora and has commanding views over the coast and a lot of the parish. It is also quite near the cemetery. Other parishes placed memorials in a similar positition and it would have been a very dramatic spot.

It seems Ackroyd wasn't a popular figure in the village and his offer was not taken up, although it may have been the remote location rather than the person who offered it which may have been the reason for the rejection.

Regards

Just struck by the similarities between the ruined Bethune Clock Tower and the one at Clyne. Although the Brora memorial is Scots Baronial in style and it is not a copy there are so many features in common with Bethune's clock that I can't help thinking it influenced the design of this war memorial, which is unique in Scotland.

Further to my last post, the local TF unit, the 5th Seaforth Highlanders, defended Bethune in April 1918 as part of the 51st Division. The Bethune clock tower aka belfry would have been familiar to men going in and out of the front lines through the town.

Like Bethune's Belfry, Brora's memorial clock has become a symbol of the town.

Thanks

Adam

Thanks to the hard work of the Friends of Clyne War Memorial and the community funds of the Kilbruar and Gordonbush wind farms, this memorial is now floodlit. The official switching-on took place last night in time for Remembrance Sunday.

Thanks to Morag Sutherland of Brora for the photograph.

This article from the War Memorial Trust's Bulletin of Feb 2015 describes recent renovations to the memorial.
