Clachan - Argyle & Bute, Kintyre District.

The Clachan war memorial takes the form of a memorial gateway into the cemetery. It is constructed of dressed freestone with some local stone used as decorative infills. It has a carved tympanum featuring a rising sun breaking through clouds in relief and with the inscription below:
GUS AM BRIS AN LA
The gateway is flanked by massive pillars crowned with electric lanterns and the gate is of wrought iron with a small metal celtic galley and mounted warrior riveted to the face.
There are polshed granite commemorative panels set into the face of both pillars listing the names of the WWI dead.

Thomson, Malcolm #300721, Gunner – From the Dingwall Section, he was the son of Lachlan & Ann Keith Thomson. He died 9 Oct 1918, age 30, and is buried at Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece, 4th Highland Mountain Brigade Ammunition Column )Transferred from the Argyll Mountain Battery, 4th HMB).

PETER MACPHAIL, ROYAL FUSILIERS.
Named on the Aberlady war Memorial in East Lothian as:
L-CPL. P. MCPHAIL, ROYAL FUSILIERS
Peter McPhail – age 26 – Lance Corporal (1878) 23rd Battalion (1st Sportsman's) Royal Fusiliers.
Peter was a game-keeper at The Kennels, Gosford, Aberlady when he enlisted as Private (5733) in the Scottish Horse Yeomanry in August 1914 but he was discharged as medically unfit in October. He obviously re-enlisted as he landed with his RF battalion at Boulogne in November 1915.
Born 1890 in Colinton Edinburgh. Son of John and Margaret (Kellie) McPhail of Scotmill, Clachan, Kintyre, Argyllshire.
Died of Wounds on 2 August 1916 and buried in Dive Copse British Cemetery, Sailly-Le-Sec, France.
Also named on the Aberlady Church memorial window as MACPHAIL. _________________ Ken |
