Hi,

Going through some of my notes I noticed that brothers Hugh and John Boulter as listed on CWGC with next of kin from Ladybank.

Name: BOULTER, HUGH HERMAN
Initials: H H
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Sergeant (Pilot)
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Date of Death: 13/08/1940
Service No: 741844
Additional information: Son of John Stanley and Else Eugenie Boulter, of Ladybank, Fife. His brother John Clifford also died on service.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Row AA. Grave 12.
Cemetery: BASSINGBOURN CUM KNEESWORTH CEMETERY

Name: BOULTER, JOHN CLIFFORD
Initials: J C
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Flight Lieutenant (Pilot)
Regiment/Service: Royal Air Force
Unit Text: 603 Sqdn.
Age: 28
Date of Death: 17/02/1941
Service No: 37757
Awards: D F C
Additional information: Son of John Stanley and Else Eugene Boulter, of Ramornie, Ladybank, Fife. His brother, Hugh Herman Boulter, also died on service.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Sec. E. Grave 997.
Cemetery: DIRLETON CEMETERY

As these two names are not on the Ladybank Memorial would I be correct to assume that they themselves were not from Ladybank?

Alex

It may be that the Boulton parents moved to Ladybank after 1941 but before the then Imperial War Graves Commission started collecting family details for their records after the war.

The IWGC would then record them as being from Ladybank but the family was not local when the sons died and so neither would be commemorated on the Ladybank memorial.

Unfortunately the SNWM database is still unavailable because it may have provided a clue with where they were born.

Where they are buried is not much of a clue either because although both are buried in the UK they seem to be buried at the cemetery near their airbases.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for your reply. Although I've been doing general aviation research for 25 years this Memorial research is still very new to me.

I'll dig a little deeper and see what I can come up with.

When I was over at Register House in Edinburgh I searched for these brothers. Found nothing so assume they were born outwith Scotland.
There is a death certificate for John but it does not add to what we know.
Nothing for father, but mother died in Bridge of Allan in 1961 age 86.
I was interested in the middle name Herman for Hugh Boulter, and his grandfather on his mother's side was Herman Nienstaedt.
So an interesting wee story for someone to unravel!

Possibility;

Births Jun 1911
Surname Given Name District Volume Page
Boulter Hugh H Richmond S. 2a 529
The district Richmond S. is an alternative name for Richmond Sry and it is in the county of Surrey

Two John C but mother's surname does not tie in

Hi,

I received a couple of replies from another forum I post on.

There is a Hugh H Boulter registered second quarter of 1911 in Richmond, Surrey - No mothers maiden name given unfortunately.

John C Boulter born 3rd quarter of 1913 in Melton Mowbray and mothers maiden name given as Newington. Ties in with his age.

Stanley John BOULTER possibly married an Elsie Eugeneie NIENSTAEDT in the second Quarter 1910 in the St Marylebone district of London. Both are on the same page of the register. Although that gives two different maiden names for the mother.

So it may be that Adams suggestion is correct and that the family moved to Ladybank after the death of their sons. Very interesting indeed.

Alex

I think you've maybe got the right people. Newington could be an anglicization of Nienstaedt.

If you think of New Town in German it would be Neustadt. It’s not exactly the same but it’s pretty close.

Hi Adam,

Yes, your probably correct. It's been an interesting little search.

If I am going to look into individual airmen from Fife, or elsewhere for that matter then I'll have to look into the geneology side of things.
