Located in Greyfriars Church Dumfries at OS Map Ref GR NX 971 763

This church has not been used for worship since 2004 and is currently for sale (July 2008). The future of this and other memorials in the church is uncertain so they are very much at risk.

The memorial consists of the 2 regimental colours and a memorial plaque.

The fabric is in a very poor condition, especially the Queen's colour.

This is the oldest of 3 sets of colours in the church.

Can anyone tell us in which campaigns these colours were carried?

The 2/21st was re-raised in Paisley in 1858 and was stationed in Wales, England and Ireland until 1862, before embarking for India and remaining there until 1868. From here the Regiment was transferred to Burma (1868-71) thereafter returning to India. When relieved by the 1/21st it returned home in 1873, serving in Scotland, England and Ireland until 1879, when it embarked for South Africa.In 1877 its title was changed to 2nd Royal Scots Fusiliers (2 RSF).

Would Royal Highland Fusiliers Museum in Glasgow take colours etc, if no-one local can?

I would hope so, but my (personal) preference would be to keep all of these memorials together, and local. Apparently the KOSB museum is not interested in their 2 sets of colours. Nor is it up to me to offer them up. I think the church has to come up with a proposal. If I recall, colours are 'laid up in the church for safekeeping'.

As I said on another thread, I have written to the Colonel in Chief of the Royal Regiment of Scotland to make her aware of the risk to these important symbols of the past.

How about the Scottish War Museum (or whatever the SUSM is called these days) in Edinburgh Castle for the colours? But you are right Paul the Colours were handed over to the church for safekeeping and it is really up to them to find a new home.

Perhaps it is time to write a letter to the local paper?
