The three names on the lower course of stone are those killed in the Second World War. An inscription at the rear of the monument reads: "The number serving from this parish was 74 men and 8 women." I presume that this refers to the Great War.

JAMES AITKEN
James Aitken – age 36 – Private (40792) 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers.
James was a gardener at Stobshiel Gardens, Humbie when he enlisted as Private (2288 ) in the 8th Royal Scots in November 1915. He was mobilised in May 1916 and posted to the 1st RSF in France in October 1916 but he was killed a month later.
Born c.1880 in Lanark. Son of the late Samuel and Jane Aitken, of New Lanark, Lanarkshire. Husband of Margaret (Somerville) Aitken of Stobshiel Gardens, Humbie and of Whitslade Cottages, Broughton, Peeblesshire who he married in 1911 in Stobo, Peeblesshire.
Missing in Action on 13 November 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.


THOMAS CLARK
Possibly:
Thomas Clark – age 21 – Private (1295) 1/8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was a member of the Thistle Lodge of Free Gardeners, Penicuik and was employed at Beil House, Stenton, East Lothian when he enlisted. He joined his battalion in France in December 1914 but he was badly wounded at Neuve Chapelle in mid-March 1915 and had a leg amputated at the 3rd Stationary Hospital in Rouen. Thomas died there a few weeks later.
Born 1893 at Cockpen, Stobhill, Midlothian. Son of the late John Clark and of Mary Alston (Girdwood) Clark (both died 1914) formerly of Torwoodlee, Galashiels, Selkirkshire.
Died of Wounds on 9 April 1915 and buried in St. Sever Cemetery, Rouen, France.
Also named on the Stenton Parish and Galashiels War Memorials.


DAVID R. FERGUSON
David Reid Ferguson – age 22 – Private (20809) 12th Battalion, Royal Scots.
David was a farm servant at Leaston, Humbie when he enlisted in March 1915. He was posted to his battalion in France in June but he was killed four months later.
Born 1893 in Leith, Edinburgh. Son of the late Mary (Reid) Ferguson (died 1899) and of George Ferguson, and step-son of Agnes (Anderson) Ferguson of Moreham Mains, Haddingtonshire.
Missing in Action on 28 September 1915 and named on the Loos Memorial, France.

Born 1894 in Humbie. Son of Alexander and Margaret (Craig) Grieve of Leggate, Humbie.
Died of Wounds on 28 December 1917 and buried in Fins New British Cemetery, Sorel-Le-Grand, France.

and his cousin – Alexander and Robert were brothers

ADAM GRIEVE

Adam joined his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1895 in Humbie. Son of Robert and Margaret (Henderson) Grieve of Windymains, Humbie.
Died of Wounds on 30 September 1918 and buried in Thilloy Road Cemetery, Beaulencourt, France.


A.N. HEPBURNE-SCOTT
Alexander Noel Hepburne-Scott – age 23 – Second Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, Scots Guards.
Alexander was educated at Repton School, Derbyshire and at Balliol College, Oxford. He enlisted as Private (2162) in the 1/14th London Regiment (London Scottish) and landed with his battalion at Le Havre in September 1914. He served until January 1915 and he was commissioned in the Scots Guards in March 1915 but he was killed two months later.
Born 1892 in Humbie. Son of the Hon. Walter George Hepburne-Scott, C.B.E. (9th Baron Polwarth), and of Edith Frances (Buxton) Lady Polwarth of Humbie House, Humbie.
Missing in Action on 16 May 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named Robertson Parish War Memorial near Hawick and on the Repton School and Balliol College memorials.


WILLIAM LAING
William Laing – age 20 – Private (2105) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
William landed with his battalion at Le Havre in February 1915.
Born 1894 in Wishaw, Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire as William Hill Laing. Son of John and Elizabeth (Fender) Laing of Saltoun Station, Humbie and of East Saltoun, Saltoun.
Missing in Action on 23 April 1915 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

JAMES MACDONALD
I cannot trace this man.
Thanks to info from Mark (Dhubthaigh) and from a family history on Ancestry I now know this to be:

James Hay Macdonald – age 37 – Private (23492) 3rd (Reserve) Battalion, Royal Scots.
James was a gardener and groom living with his family at The Lodge, Upper Keith, Humbie when he enlisted in March 1915. He had previously served with the Royal Scots. James was judged unlikely to become and efficient soldier and was discharged from the Army in July 1915. He died in the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary from post-operative shock during treatment for kidney disease contracted on military service.
Born 1878 in Edinburgh. Son of the late Angus Macdonald (died 1914) and of the late Alison (Hay) MacDonald (died 1910) of Edinburgh, Husband of Mary Rennison (Graham) Macdonald of the Children's Village, Humbie and of 8 Craigend Cottages, Liberton, Midlothian who he married in 1900 in Edinburgh.
Died on 23 December 1915 and buried in Edinburgh (North Merchiston) Cemetery. (CWG)


THOMAS S. QUINNEY
Thomas Quinney – age 19 – Private (330316) 1/9th (Highlanders) Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas enlisted as Private (5040) in the local Teritorial 8th Royal Scots and was posted to the 1/9th in France.
Born 1897 in Ormiston, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of Alexander and Sidney (Scott) Quinney of Humbie.
Killed in Action on 24 March 1918 and buried in Roye New British Cemetery, France.


WILLIAM SHARP
Thought to be:
James William Sharp – age 21 – Private (200246) 2nd Battalion, Tank Corps.
James enlisted as Gunner (992) in the 2nd Battery, Motor Machine Gun Section of the Royal Field Artillery and he joined his battery in France in September 1915. From late 1916 these units began to transfer to the Tank Corps.
Born 1896 in Bolton, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian. Son of the late Annie Douglas (Tod) Sharp (died 1896) and of John Johnstone Sharp, and step-son of Beatrice (Weir) Sharp who married John in 1898, of Ewingston Farm, Bolton/Humbie.
Died of Wounds on 25 March 1918 and buried in Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, France.
Also named on the Bolton Parish War Memorial and on the Bolton Parish Church memorial.


GEORGE SPIDEN
George Spiden – age 22 – Corporal (40197) 1st Battalion, Cheshire Regiment.
George was an agricultural labourer when he enlisted as Private (1821) in the Lothian And Border Horse Yeomanry in October 1914. He was promoted to Corporal (120407) in December 1916 and posted to the Cheshires in France in May 1917.
Born 1896 in Spott, Haddingtonshire/East Lothian.
Son of Catherine Spiden. Nephew of Thomas Spiden and of Jemima Spiden of Upper Keith, Humbie and of Humbie Mains.
Killed in Action on 21 August 1918 and buried in Adanac Military Cemetery, Miraumont, France.

THOMAS SPIERS
Thomas Spiers – age 24 – Private (18344) 13th Battalion, Royal Scots.
Thomas was a gardener at Shieldhill in Biggar, Lanarkshire when he enlisted in January 1915. He was posted to his battalion in France in July 1915 but he was wounded and evacuated home in September. He rejoined his battalion in March 1916.
Born 1892 in Crichton, Midlothian. Son of late Thomas Spiers (died 1913) and of Mary (Gardiner) Spiers of Humbie Stables, Humbie.
Missing in Action on 11 May 1916 and named on the Loos Memorial, France


THOMAS WOOD
Thomas Wood – age 19 – Private (25490) 6th Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Born 1897 in Humbie. Son of George and Christina (Stewart) Wood of Hattonhill, Humbie.
Died of Wounds on 15 January 1917 and buried in St. Hilaire Cemetery, Frevent. France.

1939 – 1945


ADAM NICHOLSON
Adam Nicholson – age 21 – Able Seaman (D/JX 303493) H.M.S. Isis, Royal Navy.
Adam was employed on the Whitburgh Estate, Humbie when he joined the navy. The destroyer “Isis” was mined and sunk off Normandy, France.
Born 1924 in Yester Parish, East Lothian. Son of Mr and Mrs Robert Nicholson of the Whitburgh Ford, Humbie.
Killed in Action/Lost at Sea on 20 July 1944 and named on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.


WILLIAM B. STEWART
William Bole Stewart – age 26 – Private (14689383) 8th Battalion, Royal Scots.
8th Royal Scots was a territorial unit with their HQ at Haddington, East Lothian and serving with 44th (Lowland) Infantry Brigade, 15th Scottish Division. They saw action in North Western Europe from mid-1944 onwards. William was killed at Leensel near Eindhoven, Holland and was re-interred in August 1946.
Born 1918 in Prestonpans, East Lothian. Son of John and Mary (Bole) Stewart of Gifford, East Lothian.
Killed in Action on 31 October 1944 and buried in Nederweert War Cemetery, Netherlands


WILLIAM STITT
William Stitt – age 29 – Lieutenant (200689) Royal Scots seconded to 5th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
William was on the teaching staff of George Heriot's School in Edinburgh when he was commissioned from Cadet in August 1941. He served with the 5th Black Watch throughout the Tunisian campaign and landed with the battalion on Sicily on 10 July 1943. William was killed during the attack on Vizzini.
Born 1914 in Humbie. Son of William Stitt and of Mary Jane Lindsay Lambie (Mitchell) Stitt of Muirpark, Humbie.
Killed in Action on 15 July 1943 and buried in Syracuse War Cemetery, Sicily, Italy.
Also named on the George Heriot's memorial.
