I thought that it was about time that someone put together a reference list for females on Scottish War Memorials. The main memorial for females in Scotland is the Scottish Nurses memorial and the details are not repeated here. This then is a list of all of the OTHER entries for females that I have found listed on Scottish War Memorials (click on the link after the name to see the actual memorial) - note that it is a list of entries not individuals, therefore some people appear more than once. Only those who died are listed, ie those listed on Rolls of Honour who survived are not included. Inscriptions are as on the memorials (with a few abbreviations) and no attempt is made to correct any errors or add information. There are separate lists for the two world wars (I have not come across any female deaths from other periods). If anyone has any corrections or additions, please let me know and I will bring the list up to date.

This is still a work in progress and hopefully will be taken further as a project when time allows. My thanks to TonyM, Jim Strawbridge and Adam Brown for their comments. I will amend this list where necessary from the comments and all other information about the individuals will be held for any future project.

Constance Muriel Steel of Juniper Green was a nurse at Bradford War Hospital who died 20/3/1917.

Jeanie A Young was a Nurse during WW1 who died of cancer post war at the time the Currie Memorial was being built. I believe she was a ' weel kent face '

Balerno also had Miss Ruby Isobel Grierson who died when the SS City of Benares was torpedoed17/9/1940.

Thanks Malcolm, this is only a list of memorial inscriptions so I will not add in Ruby Grierson because she does not appear on the memorial, but thanks for the info, I am sure that some will find it interesting to read.

By the way, if you have a better photo of the Juniper Green plaque with legible inscriptions, I know there are a couple of people who would like to see it.

Paul,

Do you want a list of women I've found?

There's not that many but it's not a problem to rake them out if required.

There are two war graves in Arbirlot churchyard from the second world war, both women from the ATS but neither feature on the Arbroath war memorial, Is this normal?

I wouldn't say normal in fact, but relatively common, however there is a big variation. Both St John's Town of Dalry and New Galloway have females listed (one WW1 and one WW2). Neither of them died in situations that gave them CWGC status. However over in Keir there is a lady who HAS CWGC status, her brother is listed and yet she is not! http://warmemscot.s4.bizhat.com/viewtopic.php?t=751&highlight=keir
