Broadford, Isle of Skye

UKNIWM Ref: 5933
O/S Map ref: NG 646 233
N57 14.403 W5 54.113

Located just off the A850, 100 yards from Broadford Community Hall, a gravel path climbs up to a Celtic Cross design with 3 panels listing the names of 62 men who died in the Great War and 1 panel at the rear lists the names of a further 20 men who died in the Second World War.

I really was quite saddened to see the state of the surroundings the memorial finds itself in with broken bottles lying all around and the remain of poppy wreaths thrown around. Very neglected and this is more glaring when a public promenade just along the road is very colourful and well tended.

Roll of Honour for Skye & Lochalsh by Graham Ross . Copies held in Portree library & inverness library.

Broadford War Memorial :

The Broadford or Strath War Memorial was erected in the summer of 1923 on a site above the A87 as it passes through the village of Broadford beside the village hall and primary school . The ceremony began with a joint service held in the Parish Church and then the Memorial was unveiled by Brigadier General McFarlan of Inverness and dedicated by the Reverend Dugald MacFarlane of Kingussie . When first erected it contained 65 names .
