THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 02.06.1917
DUNNING OFFICER FALLS -
SON OF SIR JOHN WILSON, BART., OF KIPPEN AND AIRDRIE GIVES HIS LIFE FOR HIS COUNTRY

Second Lieutenant Douglas Wilson, A. & S. H., posted as wounded and missing since 23rd April, is now reported killed. He had been wounded on the morning of that day, and after being dressed at a first-aid station returned to the fighting, and his body has been found and buried. He was 26 years of age, and was the youngest of three sons of Sir John Wilson, Bart., of Kippen-Turner, Dunning, all serving at the front. He received his commission in July, 1915, and went to the front in November, 1916. He was married in 1914 to Kathleen, daughter of Mr Henry Gray, Peterstone Court, Breeon, and leaves a daughter. He was educated at St. Andrews and Fettes College, and finished his education in Germany and France, becoming a director of Wilsons & Clyde Coal Co. Ltd. His adjutant writes that he had such a sense of duty that he returned to lead his company into action, and fell fighting in the enemy lines.
The following is an extract from a letter to Sir John Wilson, Bart., dated 28th May, from the Rev. Wm. Jardine, Chaplain, 7th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, as to Second Lieutenant T. D. Wilson:- "I know that by this time that you have the news that you sought, and that you have learned of your son's gallant death. Up to the time I was knocked out we had heard nothing of Tom. We knew from the doctor and his orderly that he had had an arm wound dressed at the aid post - i.e. the regimental aid post, and naturally thought that he had made his way to the walking wounded station, and thence down the line. It was only when inquiries began to come in that we found that it was not the case. His servant, Feeley, reached the R.A.M.C. aid post (where I was) in an unconscious condition, and died in a few minutes, and is buried in St. Nicolas. I hunted the casualty clearing stations in the neighbourhood for news of several of our officers, but no-one had ever seen Tom. You now have the explanation of this, and it is one which should fill you with pride even in the midst of your great sorrow, that your son, wounded as he was, turned back into that hell when he might honourably have left it. I suppose you know that it was in front of the chemical works, near the village of Roeux, that he must have been killed. God rest him - he was a brave man. I saw a good deal of him in the battalion. He was quiet and reserved, but he spoke freely with me. He was serious by nature, and he looked at the adventure in which he was engaged in a serious and yet a manly way. He was invariably present at church parade and took an interest in the services. I think that he must have written to his wife every day, and I know that he was accustomed to commend himself and his concerns and those whom he loved regularly to God in prayer. I trust that you and yours are experiencing the Divine comfort in your grief, and that as the days go by you will find in the manner of your son's death a certain strength for yourelves. For he would not take the way out offered him, and chose the harder task. There can be no prouder memory than that".

THS STRATHEARN HERALD: 06.07.1918
DUNNING SOLDIER KILLED

Official intimation has been received of the death in France on 21st June, of Lance-Corporal Phil Hawdon, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. Deceased, who was 22 years of age, enlisted in August, 1915, and prodeeded with his battalion to France in June, 1916, where he had been since. He had come through practically all the big engagements of the last two years, and had only returned to the rest camp the previous night after a long spell in the line. He was operating his telephone in the billet when a stray shell came over, killing six and wounding fourteen. The chaplain of the battalion writes:- "It was a sad day for me yesterday when I got word of the death of Phil. There was no man in the battalion who stood higher in my estimation than your boy, and I was proud to count him among my special friends. It was a terrible blow for me to learn that he had paid the great price. We have lost a clean, white man, a toy of high principles - principles which to the end he carried with him untarnished. His was a big character. You felt that the moment you got into real touch with him, and time and again a chat with Phil Hawdon has banished my gloominess, and made me feel how petty and insignificant were my little worries. Among his pals in the Signal Section he was a special favourite. It was impossible to believe that Phil has lived and died in vain. His influence will still live on amongst those who knew him, and I shall always think of him as a 'big' character, who without much display bore a big testimony. The Eternal God who controls the destinies of our lives will have Phil in his keeping, and that must be to us who mourn his passing, the greastest joy and comfort". Prior to enlisting he was accountant with the Union Bank of Scotland, Dunning, and during his stay there made many friends, all of whom mourn his loss. He was the only son of Mrs Hawdon, Sunnyside House, St. Ninians.

I wonder why he is not on the Memorial and also why Norman Rollo isn`t either-particularly since his father gifted the site and unveiled the memorial!
I believe that the local Historical society are researching all the casualties so perhaps we`ll learn more in due course
