Gentlemen (and women)
My apologies for a (quite) imperfect English, but browsing the web I found your forum, and searching "Valenciennes" in it I obtained many answers .

Most of them are related to soldiers buried in Valenciennes St Roch Communal cemetery. My first think was "perhaps would they like a photograph the graves"
I'm living close to the St Roch cemetery, and working at Mount Houy University, the last strong spot of German defence up to November 2, 1918 when Valenciennes was liberated by Commonwealth troops ( My father, 12 years old, was among the liberated people)
You'll find a panoramic view of Valenciennes Cemetery, made by a friend with our ( many correspondents) photographs, at this address : http://www.todayisfree.com/360.php?id=215
the web site is http://www.todayisfree.com/
Don't hesitate for queries around my town, ( Aulnoy, Famars, and more far) it will be a pleasure, (those 2 cemeteries are in the site above) then give me an e-address by MP for high resolution photographs.
The official part of my life is consecrated to mathematics (but I'm close to retirement), we have three daughters and a son, and a grandson.
Cordially
Alain

Perhaps is there a better place for my proposition, tell me where (Queries and Requests ?)

Alain

Welcome to the forum. There is no need to apologise for your English, it's very good and in fact it's better than some of our attempts at English and I don't know how many of us would try out our French on a French language forum!

I hope you find things of interest here on the forum.

Kind regards

Adam

Bonjour Alain!

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your very kind offer.

Our other site: ( http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/index.php?mforum=scottishwargraves ) deals with war/military graves rather than war memorials.

You may find that many of these people, whose names are listed on their family's gravestones, are buried in some of your local cemeteries. Would you be willing to take photographs of individual gravestones for us if we supplied each person's details?

Hi
Anne : Indeed, it would be more adapted , I did not know the second forum.
I had seen your indications of graves on this one, but of course I am willing to make and send the photographs which you will ask. Do you want that I register on the other forum ?
In this moment we have a Scottish-like weather Razz …, but a wet grave stone under an sun ray is sometimes better for contrast Shocked
I don't know if there are memorials around, if yes don't hesitate .

Alain,

It would be a good idea to register on the other site, that way, any messages regarding graves wil be in the correct place and I'm sure more people would appreciate your offer.

In my records, I can only find one man buried at St. Roch. He is:

Name: GEMMELL, THOMAS
Initials: T
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Second Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Unit Text: "D" Coy. 7th Bn.
Age: 21
Date of Death: 07/05/1918
Additional information: Son of John and Elizabeth Gemmell, of Millhall Cottage, Stirling.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: V. D. 22.
Cemetery: VALENCIENNES (ST. ROCH) COMMUNAL CEMETERY

He is mentioned on a family gravestone in Snowdon Cemetery in Stirling and it would be wonderful to post a photo of his actual gravestone in St. Roch.

This link: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewtopic.php?t=230&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=15&mforum=scottishwargraves
will take you to the page on which he is mentioned on a family stone.

I have made a visit there but missed some graves. I know another 10 men from north east Scotland are buried there.
Watt Charles Pte 202335 4th Gordon Highlanders born Banchory 05/03/1898 enlisted Aberdeen Age 20 Died of Wounds F & F 07-Apr-18 Son of John & Jessie Watt, Birks Lodge, Banchory. Valenciennes (St Roch) Communal Cemetery Fr 1142 Plot V Row A Grave 12 Banchory Memorial photo taken 2001 November. A summer photo would be lovely to have. Charles Watt is one of 94 men on the memorial. I'm trying to visit them all. Anne

Hi,
That will be done, ( don't hesitate , never !) It's summer in 5 days (for approximately 2 days Laughing ) Actually weather is often fine in "Chti land" Cool .
For other locations, (more far from Valenciennes) you can ask too, it will be possible, with more wait (along my holidays roads, there are numerous cemeteries between North and French Riviera Smile and I do so with Canadian graves) , but if for any reason it's hurry, I'm member of a french forum consecrated to WW1, and I can ask to members.

What do you want that I do with the photograph? Post it in the same thread as a reply, (this thread, ? the original thread when I'll be registered ? ) . I can also create a new thread with these photographs, .... ?

Alain,

Look here: http://scottishwargraves.phpbbweb.com/viewforum.php?f=27&mforum=scottishwargraves

If you make a new thread for each Cemetery, add photographs of graves to it (if and when you find them), then you can add a link to the thread which contains the Scottish Grave.

Hi - I will be at Valenciennes (St Roch) cemetery next week on the 25th/26th. I will be visiting the grave of my great uncle Hendry Noble of the Gordon Highlanders who was killed 90 years ago next month. If anyone would like me to visit a grave or take a photo it would be no problem.
Regards,

Gordon

Hi Gordon,

Welcome aboard!

I don't have any requests but if you're happy to photograph any Scotsmen's stones, they can be added to the 'Overseas Burials' thread.

If we discover any of them are listed on Family Stones, either a copy of the photo could be added to the individual men's posts or a link added to any you might add on the Overseas thread.

I hope you enjoy your visit!

Anne.

P.S. Do you know if your uncle is listed on a Family stone anywhere in Scotland?

Hi Anne,

Hendry Noble is on the Torphins (he lived beside there) and Kincardine O' Neil War Memorials.
Alain Dubois who lives in Valenciennes has kindly posted a photo of the grave and a few others on this Forum somewhere.
I would have liked to perhaps meet up with him next week as he has gathered a lot of information from 90 years ago like I have.

The spelling of my great uncle's name was an issue back in 1919!
I have a copy of a letter from the Memorial Hospital archives written by my great-grandmother to the then Secretary/Treasurer explaining that her son was called Hendry after her maiden name, not Henry which is the more common spelling.
