I thought that it might be a good idea to get as many national equivalents of CWGC as we can in one thread. I only occasionally need them, but I can never find them when I do. If you add any in reply to this post, I will come back and edit this post to keep them together. Some of these are private sites and are incomplete.

- in French only and database is incomplete (?) - no longer working

France - http://www.memoiredeshommes.sga.defense.gouv.fr/spip.php?rubrique8 The site now seems to include several wars.

Germany - http://www.volksbund.de/ - in German only

Netherlands - http://www.ogs.nl/ - partly in English - this link http://www.ogs.nl/pages/text.asp?subject_id=112 is in English and takes you to their database. From there you can search by cemetery.

New Zealand - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~sooty/rohtitlepage.html
New Zealand war graves website http://www.wargraves.co.nz/
NZ archives, enter a service number and you can order WW1 service records http://www.archway.archives.govt.nz/
cenotaph database http://muse.aucklandmuseum.com/databases/cenotaph/locations.aspx

Poland - http://www.polishwargraves.nl/ appears to be a site under development and only has details of graves in Edinburgh and Glasgow but it links to http://home.concepts.nl/~avalphen/info/mem.northolt.2007.pdf which has all the names on the Polish War Memorial in Northolt.

South Africa - http://www.southafricawargraves.org/

UK - http://www.cwgc.org/

USA - http://www.abmc.gov/home.php

This link takes you two windows further into the site, to the Search page: http://www.volksbund.de/graebersuche/content_suche.asp

Nachname = Surname
Vorname = Forename
Geburtsdatum = Date of birth
Todes-/Vermisstendatum: Date of death/reported missing
Geburtsort = Place of birth

The last three are optional and in many cases the searcher will not have those details anyway.

Fill in the first two and click on 'Suche beginnen'.

The next page is about you and your interest. If you only want to carry out a quick search, you need only complete the compulsory sections marked with a *

Click on Herr (male) or Frau (female)
Vorname = Forename
Nachname = Surname
Strasse/Nr. = Street Address & No
Land/PLZ/Ort = Town/Postcode
No need to complete in full. Just type (any) one letter in each box and move on to the bottom of the page and click the box marked "Ich erkläre mich den Bestimmungen ...", then click on "Zur Ergebnisseite".

On the next page, click on "Suchanfrage ausführen"

Then, finally, you get to the results page. Click on the surname to display full details of each entry.

The VdK database is neither as comprehensive nor as detailed in content as the CWGC register.

be sure to click the box headed "Ich erkläre mich mit den Bestimmungen ... etc" when you see it
