Derek,

When did you take the photo at Auchterarder?

The one I have posted was just at the beginning of October last. The plaques have had a bit of a clean up too.

By the way David Ramsay, who is commemorated, was on board the 'Iolaire'. This tragic story opens the book Not Forgotten and it is recommended - very poignant. As it was designed to do it reinforced the point that it is so important to continue research and to remember.

I took the pictures 10 years ago.

Early on the morning of the 1st January 1919, two months after the end of the First World War, the Admiralty Yacht Iolaire was approaching Stornoway harbour in the Island of Lewis carrying Naval Ratings returning home for New Year’s leave when she foundered on rocks. 205 men died within 20 yards of the shore just a short distance from the pier at Stornoway where local people were waiting to welcome home their men folk.

Derek,

There is a Robert Porter, Pvt. 4/5th Black Watch, commemorated at Auchterarder.
If I'm on the right lines, I see, in your book, that he is also listed at Hawick (and one of three brothers killed!).
I have, to date, found no local report/obituary for him. Do you have anything, photo etc.
And if this is the same man do you know what his connection was up this way?

I previously posted that a victim of the Iolaire tragedy is commemorated here. This is the newspaper extract;

THE STRATHEARN HERALD: 11.01.1919
AUCHTERARDER VICTIM OF THE STORNAWAY DISASTER

On Friday last week, Mrs D. B. Ramsay, 2 Townhead, Auchterarder, received intimation from the Admiralty that her husband, Seaman David Bisset Ramsay, had been drowned throuth the foundering of H.M.Y. Iolaire at Stornaway on New Year's morning. Seaman Ramsay was a native of Carnoustie, and had been engaged in the whaling industry all his life till called up as an R.N.R. man at the outbreak of war. He was a harpooner on 'The Morning' (Captain Adamson). He was home in Auchterarder on Christmas leave, and only left on the 27th December. Deceased, who was a keen Freemason, leaves a widow and four young children. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon to Auchterarder Cemetery. A bearer party, consisting of two Naval men and four sergeants of the Black Watch, carried the coffin, which was covered with the Union Jack, to the hearse. An escort party of Volunteers, servicemen, both home and colonial, and returned prisoners of war, under the command of Lieutenant M'Beth, preceeded the hearse to the cemetery. A short service was conducted in the house, and at the graveside by the Rev. Norman M'Kenzie, M.A., St. Andrew's U.F. Church, and the 'Last Post' was sounded by Sergeant David Riddoch, R.G.A.

Information has been received that Private Alexander Eadie, 9th Black Watch, was killed in the advance of 25th September. Private Eadie was the eldest son of the late Mr James Eadie, slater, Auchterarder. He was married and resided in Falkirk.
