From the 'Northern Times' of 15th September 1921

The Gaelic inscription and the English translation

"Siol nan sonn, 's nan curaidhean
Bha'n tir an fraoich a'tuinneachadh
A'dhion ar cliu gu h-urramach
'S nach fuilingeadh an t-eucoir"

"Scions of Heroic race
Dwelling in the land of heather
Well have you maintained our fame
And would not suffer wrong to triumph"

Hugh

Thanks for updating this thread. I didn't have 2nd Radio Oficer Hatton on the Sutherland Roll of Honour, thanks for finding out about him. I wonder if he is also listed in Grimsby?

Regards

Adam

Hello Adam,

I may have been hastie with my reply. Looking at it again I have noticed a very obvious error above. The memorial states J Hatton as a Quartermaster Merchant Navy but the name I have mentioned was a radio officer.

I will look further into this one.

Regards
Hugh

Visited the memorial today. An information board close by states that the memorial was in Balnakiel Old Kirkyard until 2002
