You can actually find all the names on this memorial on the SDGW CD-Rom. I know that because I transcribed it and looked them up a couple of years ago. Unfortunately I think I've lost the transcription.

Hello people,
this is my first post and it's just to say that the J Tinlin on the plaque in this picture is my Great Grandfather. His name appears on the plaque at Old St.Paul's in Market Street Edinburgh. This was to commemorate the members of the church who fell.

His name is also on the plaque in Waverley Station, this time it's the GNER plaque and My Great Grandfather is listed as a porter.

For the record he was killed at Ypress 16 August 1917

Thanks for the information Supercat, it's always nice to get a little more detail on someone.

Do you have any other information about him, perhaps a photo?

Regards,

David

I see I have to make several posts before I get to upload anything. It always helps if you read the instructions to new members before spending ages wondering why there is no 'bit to click on' other than the bit marked New members, help and instructions!

I didn't know that my Great Grandfather's name appeared on so many memorials and having researched the family tree quite extensively I know more about John Jarvis Tinlin than I do about myself!

So, without further ado I'll tell you about the man who, up until now, was just another name on a war memorial.

He was born at 5 Richmond Lane, Edinburgh, 2nd May 1884. He married Susan Barnes Bowie in Old St.Paul's Scottish Episcopal Church 14th February 1908 (I have a copy of the statutory notice) and was living at Holyrood Square, Edinburgh.

He is listed, in the Scottish Census 1901, as still living with his father Peter, his older sister Jessie and younger sister Mary at Whitehorse Close. His occupation is listed as 'Billiard Marker' (Although I'm guessing that's been lost in translation. My Great, great, great, great Grandfather George is listed as 'Fintin' in one record and 'Tinline' in another!). Anyhoo, Billiard Marker it is for now and even now I'm wondering if he chalked cues for players at some club, erm ..........

At least we know he was inspired to go and work for GNER and was a porter when he went off to war.

He was a Freemason, I saw his membership card for 1913 which is still in the family.

I'm still researching whether he had any more children other than my granddad Peter and My great Aunt Suzie but that's it for the moment.

There's a tragic story about his father, Peter and a funny story, if it's true, about his son Peter but I'll save them for later posts

Hello,
badboy here, aka Supercat.

Bad experience, funny story, thought I would change which email address I use in my profile! Missus distracted me, I clicked on something I shouldn't have and next thing I knew I couldn't get back in so re-registered. Seemed the easiest option!

So, badboy it is and I'll try not to screw up again!

The other day I said I had a couple of stories to tell so here's the first of them.

As you know John Tinlin was my great grandfather. His dad, Peter Tinlin is someone I'd really like to have met. Born in 1855 he married my great, great grandmother Isabella Rose Polson on 2 Feb 1878. They had three daughters and a son. The oldest daughter, Jessie and their son John (As you know) survived childhood but two daughters died aged two and three. Very tragic.

Worse was to come. Isabella died in 1895 aged 32.

According to the records the family moved house several times and they were staying at 35 Whitehorse Close (Long since demolished) Edinburgh in 1907 when tragedy hit the family again. He died 9 Apr 1907 at 35 Whitehorse Close, Edinburgh District, age 51 [SCVL, The Scotsman, 10 Apr 1907, page 8]. He had chest pains in bed, went to his window (on the top floor of the building), lost his balance, and fell to his death [The Scotsman].

I really must check to see if there was a will at the time and who gained from it. Who knows, there might have been a gentle push! I jest, I'm sure it was a genuine fall but I'm concerned that someone would have their window open so wide on a top floor!

Got a picture of his death notice and cause of death is accidental fall from window.

Somewhere there is a picture of Peter Tinlin and I'm trying to track down which relative has it along with letters written between John Tinlin (Gunnner) and his wife. They speak about 'trouble' with their son Peter (My Grandfather). There is also a letter between John Tinlin and a friend who was in Palestine. In the letter you can tell that they are unhappy about the war and question what it's all about. Interesting stuff.

That's it for now.

Stay alive people, it's the only way to live
