Stewarton - Kilmarnock & Loudon District

The Stewarton war memorial is a grey granite obelisk standing on a square pedestal, with a wreath carved in heavy releif on the face, which rests on three steps. The commemoration and names of the WWI dead are recorded in lead lettering on the faces of the pedestal. The names of the WWII dead have been added to the faces of the lower section of the pedestal. The monument stands in a small garden area at the road junction, Standalane.
The memorial was by monumental masons Messrs. Scott & Rae of Glasgow. The company daybook had the following entry:
Order No. 5510, Stewarton, Grey obelisk, Erected June 1921, DayBook 335.

While he was flying in the summer of 1944 from Machrihanish to Kirkwall to join H.M. Aircraft Carrier Victorious, the plane in which he was crew crashed near Crieff. He was twenty years old.

Another unbelievable find for me here.
In Rattray Churchyard lies Col-Sergt. John Grubb, 4th R.S.F. His father was a flax dresser at Craigmill, Rattray and his wife lived in Blairgowrie.

Name: GRUBB, JOHN
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Colour Serjeant
Regiment/Service: Royal Scots Fusiliers
Unit Text: "C" Coy. 4th Bn.
Age: 38
Date of Death: 22/08/1914
Service No: 4518
Additional information: Husband of Jane Grubb, of 63, William St., Blairgowrie, Perthshire.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: In North-East corner.
Cemetery: RATTRAY PARISH CHURCHYARD

However, he does not appear on the Blairgowrie & Rattray War Memorial, which we know is not unusual in itself.

I recently copied his obituary from the Blairgowrie Advertiser, which read;

Deceased was within four months of completing 21 years' service in the Army. He held long service and good conduct medals. The headquarters of the 4th R.S.F. is at Kilmarnock, and Col.-Sergt. Grubb was stationed at Stewarton........

I looked at the Stewarton Memorial and he is commemorated - incredible.

Sgt. Grubb's brother-in-law who is commemorated on the Blairgowrie & Rattray War Memorial.

BLAIRGOWRIE ADVERTISER: 24.08.18

Observer Alex. Thom, Black Watch, third son of James Thom, 68 William Street, was killed in action on 28th July.
He enlisted in 1916 and had been over two years at the front. He served his apprenticeship as a hairdresser with Mr A. Steven, Allan Street, and was employed in Edinburgh when he joined up. His brother, James, is serving on H.M.S. Australia.
Observer Thom’s wife, who resides in Edinburgh, has received the following letter from his O.C.:- “It is with deep regret and tender sympathy that I write you regarding the great bereavement that you have sustained in the death of your husband, 9805 Pte. A. Thom, Black Watch. He was with the battalion during the recent heavy fighting in the south, and rendered excellent service as an observer. On the morning of 28th July last, while at his post of duty, a shell landed near, killing him and three of his companions. He suffered no pain, as death was instantaneous and his body was reverently buried on the field of battle. His in truth was a soldier’s death, and his a soldier’s final resting place. I can hardly tell you how greatly he is missed, especially by the officers, and the men of his company. He did noble work for the battalion. His life, though short in years, was full of fine service and crowned at last with self-sacrifice, which qualities, it is good to remember, count for most in the end. We realise something of your sorrow, and our hearts go out to you in fullest sympathy. We trust you will have the promised strength to bear so heavy a trial. May the Saviour, who himself died for us and rose again, be very near to you to comfort and sustain. God bless, guide, and help you and yours at all time”.
