The Scotsman, Monday 20 September 1920
War Memorials
LIBERTON. A memorial to the men of the parish who fell in the war was unveiled on Saturday afternoon at Liberton Cemetery by Mrs Wauchope, Niddrie, in the presence of a large assembly. The memorial consists of a simple Celtic cairn of dressed Cullaloe stone, the names of the fallen, numbering 125, being recorded on four bronze panels, over which the inscription, "To the Glory of God, and in memory of the men from the district of Liberton, who died in the Great War, 1914-1919." The service was presided over by Brig.-Gen. R. G. Gordon-Gilmour who said that the memorial would serve not only to commemorate the valour of those who had fallen, but as an incentive and reminder to future generations to do likewise, and follow their example if ever a similar danger occurred again. The memorial differed from all others near the same spot not to one person who had died in bed full of years, but to a splendid band of men who had dared all, and given their lives for King and country. After the singing of the 46th Psalm, an address was delivered by the Rev. Wm. Main, Trinity College, Edinburgh, who said that the brave men whose sacrifice they were commemorating had been inspired by a love of righteousness, country, and God. The splendid comradeship that the war had called forth was never more needed than in these present days of strife and unrest - the aftermath of war. He appealed for a greater spirit of sacrifice and brotherhood to overcome the difficulties that lie ahead of the nation. During the unveiling ceremony a lament was played by the pipers, and a volley fired by a party of Highland Light Infantry, after which the "Last Post" was sounded on the bugles.

The sculptor Charles Pilkington D'or Jackson's business papers are lodged in the National Library, Edinburgh, Accesssion Number 7445. In Box 1, File 6 there are letters confirming that the memorial was designed by the architect William Davidson. The modelling and bronze work was carried out by Jackson and cast by Messrs.
