260 Bath Street, Glasgow.

Google map showing location

NS 582 659

Not listed on UKNIWM.

The church has a tearoom/restaurant built on to it, which is open from 9am to 4pm. It looks quite nice and might be worth a visit when in town, although I didn't stay long enough.

My thanks to the caretaker and the organist for allowing me into the church to take these photos.

No names listed for WW2, although the memorial commemorates the dead of that war as well as the Great War.

I couldn't resist looking up one of the names

DEMPSTER, EBENEZER
Initials: E
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Gordon Highlanders
Unit Text: "C" Coy. 2nd Bn.
Age: 37
Date of Death: 26/10/1917
Service No: S/43161
Additional information: Husband of the late Isabella Dempster.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 135 to 136.
Memorial: TYNE COT MEMORIAL

Interestingly there is a Thomas Mochrie listed as well. I wonder if he was the 4th Mochrie (the one not a brother of the other three) killed at Loos discussed yesterday in the Kilbirnie thread?

The only other T Mochrie listed on CWGC is:

Name: MOCHRIE
Initials: T H
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Private
Regiment/Service: Cameronians (Scottish Rifles)
Unit Text: 5th Bn.
Date of Death: 13/08/1915
Service No: 8162
Additional information: Son of Mrs. K. Mochrie, of 10, Sufton St., Birkby, Huddersfield.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: I. F. 7.
Cemetery: ROYAL IRISH RIFLES GRAVEYARD, LAVENTIE

I'm not sure if this proves anything, as IIRC, 5 SR was a Glasgow battalion.

Do you know if this memorial was previously sited at the old Renfield Street Church?

I notice one of the names is John Hope. The Minister at the old Renfield Street Church was Dr Leslie Hope.

The following information was provided by Stewart Kerrigan of Renfield – St. Stephen’s Church. It is reproduced here on the understanding that anyone using the information will please acknowledge its source.

The current congregation is the "descendant" of several former congregations and church amalgamations going back to the mid 1700s. Hence our collection of several war memorials.
In summary the current building in Bath St, was originally built for an Independent Congregation in 1852, which ceased functioning around 1873,. The building was gifted to the Church of Scotland in 1875 and became Blythswood Parish Church not to be confused with Bath St UP Church later Blythswood UF Church which stood on the opposite side of Bath St. Renfield originates from the former Renfield St Church now British Homes Stores - BHS site , not to be confused with Renfield Church which originally was in Renfield St at Gordon St and then stood at the corner of Bath St/Elmbank St. St Stephen's was originally at the corner of Cambridge St/Renfrew St.
As you will see by the various congregational war memorials it would be unrealistic to include all the former names. The last amalgamation was in 1974, between Renfield and St Stephen's when the current name of Renfield -St Stephen's name was adopted.

This memorial is located on the wall behind the communion table.

Within a storeroom in the church quite a number of memorials, from churches long since gone, have been stored for safe keeping. Some of the memorials are in need of some TLC, hence the apologies for the quality of some of the photographs.

BUCCLEUCH PARISH CHURCH

Buccleuch Parish Church was created from a union of Garnethill Parish Church and Port Dundas Parish Church (which had been destroyed by fire in 1914) in 1916. The congregation united with St. Stephen’s Parish Church in 1946, after which the former Buccleuch parish Church was used as halls by the united congregation. Buccleuch Halls were demolished in 1968 and the War Memorial which was in the premises has since been lost. As far as can be established, no record exists of the Names on this Memorial, who are known only to God.

COWCADDENS CHURCH

The War Memorial from Cowcaddens Church was made of carved marble and removed when the building was closed for congregational use in 1977. The Memorial was placed in storage in the crypt of Renfield – St. Stephen’s Parish Church, along with other Memorials, as there was insufficient space to display all the War Memorials in the church that were in the possession of the united congregation.
Some of the Memorials in storage were damaged on 26th December, 1998 when the church steeple collapsed during a hurricane storm. The crypt was very badly damaged. The Memorials made of metal, although scratched, were eventually recovered from the rubble. Unfortunately, because the Memorial from Cowcaddens Church was made of marble it was shattered and destroyed and never recovered. As far as can be established, no record exists of the Names on this Memorial, who are now known only to God.
