SDGW have only 1 man listed as residing in Maxton and this is Pte. William R Jeffrey who was born in Glasgow, lived in Maxton and enlisted in Galashiels.
And curiously, his name doesn't appear on the Maxton Memorial.

There are no CWGC graves listed within Maxton Churchyard.

JOHN BOA. Pte. CAMERON HIGHLANDERS.
John Boa – age 20 – Private (S/26986) 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
John was employed by the North British Railway Company when he enlisted in the 7th Cameron Highlanders. He was wounded in August 1917 and evacuated to hospital in Leicester.
Born 1898 in Wilton, Hawick, Roxburghshire. Son of Walter and Jessie (Lambert) Boa of Maxton Station House.
Died of Wounds on 24 April 1918 and buried in Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France.

Charles Clement Francis Cunningham – age 33 – Captain, 2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
Charles was an Agent of the Jardine, Matheson Company of Hong Kong. He arrived in Liverpool from New York in June 1915 and gained a commission in the Argylls in September. He joined his battalion in France as a Captain in July 1916 but was fatally wounded at High Wood on the Somme a month later and he died in 13th Field Ambulance at Dernancourt.
Born 1882 in Morebattle, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Charles John Cunningham (died 1906) and of Margaret (Crossley) Cunningham of Muirhouselaw, Maxton.
Died of Wounds on 19 August 1916 and buried in Dernancourt Communal Cemetery, Somme, France.

Kenneth Edward Cunningham – age 32 – Captain, 2nd Battalion, Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment)
Kenneth was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh and was on the staff of John Crossley and Sons, carpet manufacturers, at Dean Clough Mills in Halifax. He was living at 26 Ventnor Terrace, Halifax when he married in February 1914. He was commissioned in August 1914 and joined his battalion in France in March 1915 but was badly wounded at Hill 60 near Ypres in April. Kenneth was promoted to Captain in June 1916 but a year later he was wounded and reported missing at the Rouex Chemical Works near Arras. His death while a prisoner of war was confirmed by the Germans but his burial place was lost.
Born 1884 in Kelso, Roxburghshire. Son of the late Charles John Cunningham (died 1906) and of Margaret (Crossley) Cunningham of Muirhouselaw, Maxton. Husband of Mary Isobel Murray (Allison) Cunningham who he married in February 1914 in St. Marylebone, London.
In 1921 she became Mrs. Arthur V. Lister of 30, Headlands, Kettering, Northamptonshire.
Died of Wounds on 3 May 1917 and named on the Arras Memorial, France.
Also named on the Fettes College memorial and in the Borough of Halifax Book of Remembrance.

Their eldest brother, Lieutenant Alexander Crossley Cunningham of the 6th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry was killed on 24 October 1901 at Smithfield, South Africa in the Boer War.


DAVID EASTON. Cpl. TANK CORPS.
David Easton – age 27 – Corporal (76649) 16th Battalion, Tank Corps.
David was living in Newtown St. Boswells, Roxburghshire when he enlisted. As Private (22775) he joined the 6th King's Own Scottish Borderers in France and later transferred to the Tank Corps. His remains were recovered from the battlefield at Bellicourt and were re-interred at Vendhuile together with 18 other men of the battalion who were killed that day.
Born 1891 in Smailholm, Roxburghshire. Son of Andrew and Maggie (Brown) Easton of Rutherford Burnside, Maxton and of Upper Nisbet, Maxton.
Killed in Action on 29 September 1918 and buried in Unicorn Cemetery, Vendhuile, Aisne, France.

John Galbraith – age 31 – Lance Corporal (435490) 50th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
John had emigrated to Canada in about 1909 and was working as a teamster when he enlisted at Calgary, Alberta in July 1915. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in October and landed with the battalion in France in August 1916. John was trained as a Lewis gunner and promoted in February 1917 but was killed two months later at Vimy Ridge.
Born 1887 in Greenlaw, Berwickshire. Son of George and Janet (Darling) Galbraith of Ellisland, Berwickshire and of Rutherford Burnside, Maxton.
Killed in Action on 10 April 1917 and buried in Givenchy-En-Gohelle Canadian Cemetery, Souchez, France.


JAMES W. GRANT. Pte. MACHINE GUN CORPS.
James Wood Grant – age 19 – Private (145156) 29th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps.
James enlisted as Private (38953) in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and was posted to the MGC in France. He died in 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Hazebrouck.
Born 1899 in Maxton Village. Son of Robert Alexander Grant and Isabella Rutherford (Keddie) Grant of St. Boswells. Maxton.
Died of Wounds on 5 September 1918 and buried in La Kreule Military Cemetery, Hazebrouck, France.

Thomas Pringle Grant – age 34 – Private (799303) 15th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
The 15th was one of the battalions raised from the local militia unit, the 48th Highlanders of Canada.
Thomas had emigrated to Canada in March 1910 and was a carpenter in Toronto, Ontario when he enlisted in January 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in August and joined his battalion in France in October 1916.
Born 1882 in Bowden, Roxburghshire. Son of Robert Alexander Grant and Isabella Rutherford (Keddie) Grant of St. Boswells, Maxton. Husband of Elizabeth or Betsy (Gray) Grant of 29 Eastmount Avenue and of 363 Main Street, Toronto who he married in 1908 in Maxton.
Missing in Action on 15 August 1917 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France .

Robert Jessiman – age 32 – Private (22261) 12th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry.
Robert had served his apprenticeship in Kelso and was a gardener in Leith when he married there in November 1904. He was a motorman with the Glasgow Tramways when he enlisted and he joined his battalion in France in October 1915.
Born 1884 at Maxton Station. Son of William (former Station Master) and of Elizabeth (Naughten) Jessiman of Maxton Station House and of Littledean, Maxton. Husband of Agnes (Miller) Jessiman of 95 Hopehill Road, Maryhill, Glasgow who he married in 1904 in Leith, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 23 May 1916 and buried in Bois-Carre Military Cemetery, Haisnes, France.
Also named on the Glasgow Roll of Honour.


PETER McCALL. Pte. KINGS OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
Peter McCall – age 34 – Private (16856) 1st Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 Peter was a ploughman at Edrom, Roxburghshire. His family moved to Mertoun, Berwickshire in 1909 where his father worked on the estate. Peter was chauffeur to Herbert Ostlere of Arkleby Hall, Aspatria, Cumberland when he enlisted in November 1914. He was posted to the 1st KOSB at Gallipoli in May 1915 but was killed a month later.
Born 1881 in Edrom, Berwickshire. Son of Alexander and Catherine (Pike) McCall of Mertoun, Berwickshire and of Maxton.
Missing in Action on 4 June 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Mertoun Parish War Memorial and on the Parsonby & Plumbland Parish Church Memorial in Arkleby.



WILLIAM PRESTON. Pte. ARMY SERVICE CORPS.
William Preston – age 32 – Private (50526) 13th Battalion, Manchester Regiment, transferred as Private (563006) to the 982nd Employment Company, Labour Corps.
William was brought up by his grandparents Edward and Margaret Preston in Maxton Village. He enlisted as Private (282445) in the Army Service Corps but was posted to the 13th Manchesters in Salonica, northern Greece. Later he transferred to the Labour Corps but he died of illness in the 47th General Hospital.
Born 1886 in Maxton. Son of Janet Preston. Cousin of Mrs. William Cockburn, of The Green, St. Boswells, Roxburghshire.
Died on Active Service on 17 September 1918 and buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.
Also named on the St. Boswells Parish War Memorial.

JAMES ROSS. LONDON SCOTTISH.
James Ross – age 34 – Private (2565) 1/14th Battalion, London Regiment (London Scottish)
In 1891 James was at Cargilfield School in Leith and continued his education at Fettes College in Edinburgh. He played rugby with the London Scottish which he captained in 1901/2 and in 1904/5 and he was capped for Scotland five times between 1901&03. By 1908 he was a stockbroker living at Throgmorton Street, London. In 1911 he was living with his widowed mother Emily Harriet Ross at Hazelwood, Warlingham, Surrey and they were at Starrock Court, Chipstead, Surrey when he enlisted. He landed with his battalion at Le Havre in September 1914 and they were in action at Messines six weeks later where James was killed.
Born 1880 at Rutherford, Maxton. Son of the late Richard Ross (died 1908) of Rutherford, Maxton and Emily Harriet (Johnson) Ross.
Missing in Action on 1 November 1914 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Cargilfield School memorial, the Fettes College memorial, the Scottish Rugby Union memorial at Murrayfield and on the Chipstead Village War Memorial.

Richard (Dickon) Ross, Military Cross – age 22 – Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment.
Known to the family as “Dickon” Richard, aged 16, was at Fettes College in Edinburgh in 1911. He enlisted as Corporal (3/6922) in the Devonshires and was commissioned from Cadet in the Officer Training Corps in November 1914. He joined his battalion in France in May 1915 and was awarded a Military Cross in the King's Birthday Honours in June 1916. His remains were recovered from the Somme battlefield and he was re-interred at Lesboeufs in August 1919.
Born 1894 at Rutherford, Maxton. Son of the late Richard Ross (died 1908) and Emily Harriet (Johnson) Ross of Starrock Court, Chipstead, Surrey and of The Bungalow, North Road, Sherborne, Dorset.
Killed in Action on 25 September 1916 and buried in Guards' Cemetery, Lesboeufs, Somme, France.
Also named on the Fettes College memorial and on the Chipstead Village War Memorial.

Thomas Stewart Ross – age 18 – Second Lieutenant, 1st Battalion, Cameron Highlanders.
In 1911 Thomas, aged 11, was living at Rutherford Farm House in Maxton with his elder sisters, Elizabeth and Emily and his brother John. He was educated at Fettes College in Edinburgh before enlisting as Private (52706) in the 4th (Reserve) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. He was commissioned from an Officer Cadet Unit in June 1918 and joined his battalion in France in October 1918 but he died a month later, two days after the armistice.
Born 1899 at Rutherford, Maxton. Youngest son of the late Richard Ross (died 1908) and Emily Harriet (Johnson) Ross of Starrock Court, Chipstead, Surrey and of The Bungalow, North Road, Sherborne, Dorset.
Died of Wounds on 13 November 1918 and buried in Premont British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
Also named on the Fettes College memorial and on the Chipstead Village War Memorial.

PATRICK G. THOMSON. Cpl. WILTSHIRE REGIMENT.
Patrick Grant Thomson – age 23 – Corporal (21870) 1st Battalion, The Duke of Edinburgh's Wiltshire Regiment.
In 1911 Patrick, aged 15, together with his brother Robert Douglas Thomson, an apprentice chemist, were living with their aunts, Helen and Mary Thomson, at 34 Priestfield Road, Newington, Edinburgh. Patrick joined the joint British Red Cross and St. John's Ambulance Wounded & Missing Soldiers Department and served in France from August to November 1915. He was living in Oxford when he enlisted as Private (8/13862) in the 36th Training Reserve Battalion which until August 1916 had been the 9th (Reserve) Battalion of the Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Patrick was posted to the 1st Wiltshires in France but was evacuated to the Red Cross Auxiliary Military Hospital in Rochdale, Lancashire where he died.
Born 1895 in Carlisle, Cumberland. Son of the late John Stuart Thomson and of Isabella Gordon (McKerron) Thomson of The Manse, Maxton.
The Rev. David Denholm McKerron was the minister at Maxton.
Patrick named his brother Robert Douglas Thomson as his legatee and they are buried together in the family plot in Grange Cemetery in Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 29 November 1918 and buried in Edinburgh (Grange) Cemetery (CWG)


ROBERT YOUNG. Pte. KINGS OWN SCOTTISH BORDERERS.
Robert Stewart Edmondston Young – age 24 – Private (201265) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Robert was a ploughman at Rutherford Burnside, Maxton when he enlisted. He was posted as Private (8273) to the 1/4th KOSB in Egypt and was onboard the troopship “Ivernia” when she was torpedoed and sunk by the German submarine UB-47 off Cape Matapan in Greece in January 1917.
Robert and most of the 2400 troops were rescued and he went on to serve in Palestine where he was fatally wounded. He died in the 19th General Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt.
Born 1892 in Stichell, Roxburghshire. Son of Walter and Cecilia (Scott) Young of Rutherford Burnside, Maxton and of Roxburgh Newtown, Roxburgh.
Died of Wounds on 22 June 1917 and buried in Alexandria (Hadra) War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt.
