This memorial has a sad tale to tell. It was erected in 1921, designed by Alexander Carrick. Tragically, the bronze statue (known locally as 'the wee man') was stolen in August 1998. The town considered it lost and, commendably, commissioned a replacement which was put in place in September, 1999. Unfortunately, the replacement figure was over-size and when placed on the original setting (always so carefully considered by Carrick) it overwhelmed the setting and even obscured some of the lettering.

Amazingly, the original bronze was found, dumped, in February, 2000 and brought back to the town. Instead of triumphantly restoring Carrick's wonderful creation, the over-size model was left on the original plinth and the 'wee man' now stands beside a redundant mill bell in the centre of the town. A sorry state of affairs.

Ian

Do we know who made the replacement and why they chose to make it bigger?

Do we know who made the replacement? - Not immediately, but I may be able to find out.

Why did they make it bigger? - A mis-placed civic pride??

OS map ref NT360371

The architect of the original memorial was James B. Dunn who was also responsible for the Hawick War Memorial backdrop.

The UKNIWM state that:
THE ORIGINAL FIGURE WAS STOLEN ON 9 AUGUST 1998. £10,000 WAS RAISED LOCALLY TO REPLACE IT AND A NEW FIGURE WAS INSTALLED IN SEPTEMBER 1999. IN FEBRUARY 2000, THE ORIGINAL WAS FOUND BY POLICE OFFICERS PATROLLING THE PERIMETER OF EDINBURGH AIRPORT
