Pollokshaws Memorial - Glasgow

Location: The memorial stands in front of Pollokshaws Hall at 2025 Pollokshaws Road, G43 1NE, which is at the junction of Pollokshaws Road and Christian Street.

The Pollokshaws war memorial in Glasgow is an ornate freestone celtic cross with traditional wheel-head, but in a more contemporary design. The wheel-head has a celtic knotwork pattern carved in relief on its face. A downturned sword with celtic pattern is carved in relief on the face with a shield with saltire and the City of Glasgow's Coat of Arms beneath with the inscription 'labor vincit'.
The names of the dead are cut into the faces of the tapering pedestal but these have become severely weathered.

I have transcribed the names on the memorial as detailed below. I am fairly sure this is accurate but due to the weathering of some panels there may be some errors with individual letters. I have been trying to get access to the Hall in case there is a roll of honour inside to make a comparison and I will keep trying.

Some thought is going to have to be given to restoring/replacing the names here - THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE?

The names would have to be read into a tape recorder to transcribe the list of names. You cannot make them out from photos.

I've sent a PM to a member of the forum who might have some contacts that could look into some restoration of this memorial.

Not making any promises, but hopefully it can be highlighted that some action needs to be taken...and SOON.

Just to let you know I've transcribed around 90% of the names. I intend to visit the memorial soon with my list to double check the remainder and then I'll post the list on the forum.

The following soldier is listed on this memorial. The locations for birth enlistment etc, are as per Soldiers Died and the Irish War memorial Records.

ARMSTRONG John Corporal 12068 5th Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers
Born: Eastwood, Pollockshaw, Renfrewshire Enlisted: Pollockshaws, Renfrewshire

It would be interesting to find out if there was any relationship between the three Armstrong's listed on the memorial.
