This is an interesting design. I take it was originally a drinking trough for animals.

Hello Adam.
As you enter Carmunnock Village from the City of Glasgow its just along on the left hand side, just past the bus terminus, and opposite the petrol station.

By the way I'm sure it was indeed a drinking trough. I remember reading a description of the village in one of the 'Statistical Account of Scotland' books which said that there was always a steady procession of farm carts through the village every morning bringing fresh milk from Ayrshire into the city. There is another much older looking drinking trough set into a wall at the opposite end of the village on the East Kilbride road, but its also very small and I would think it probably didn't match the demand in the early 20th century so the war memorial must have served an important function when unveiled.

I've just added a postcard of the memorial to my collection and I'll post a pic below. I wanted this one as Carmunnock was the memorial that started it all for me. When I was wee I used to run around up there and always stopped at the memorial when cycling into Ayrshire and Lanarkshire to eat my pieces and look at the panels and wonder, to borrow Mark's title, about the faces behind the names...those were the good old days before CWGC websites!

Jim

Thanks for the update. Did you ever research any names? It's a good memorial to look into, not too many and with full names, rank, unit, battalion, and year of death all provided.

Regards

Adam
