Whitletts Air Crash Memorial, 1941
The granite memorial lies close by to several CWGC graves of Airmen in Section R, 1931 Division of cemetery.
INSCRIPTION READS:
A
TOKEN OF RESPECT
TO 22 VICTIMS OF AIR CRASH
AT WHITLETTS 14TH AUG. 1941
SUBSCRIBED FOR BY INHABITANTS OF WHITLETTS

For clarification, the memorial is in Ayr cemetery.
On August 14, 1941, Consolidated YB-24 Liberator AM260, an American heavy bomber, veered off the runway during take-off, striking a small building and coming to rest in an embankment. 22 personnel in the aircraft were killed. |
