You may have seen I’ve posted lists of war memorials for several areas of Scotland over the past few weeks. Spoons and Kinnethmont have kindly helped with the Dumfries & Galloway and Aberdeenshire lists this week.
My intention is to eventually post lists in the relevant sections of the forum that will cover all of Scotland.
Here is a list of Scotland’s present 32 Unitary and Island Authorities (and for Highland and Scottish Borders the sub districts within the main authority). There is also a list of memorials with a Scottish connection outside Scotland.

I have made a link to any lists I have already posted. If anyone wants me to speed things up and get a list they would want to see onto the forum sooner rather than later let me know and I will make that a priority. Otherwise I will just plod through them randomly.

Aberdeenshire
Angus
Argyll & Bute
City of Aberdeen
City of Dundee
City of Edinburgh
City of Glasgow
Clackmannanshire
Dumfries & Galloway
East Ayrshire
East Dunbartonshire

Tremendous work Adam.

Can I be so bold as to ask for the Roxburghshire part of the Borders please?

Adam,
I'm in the process of typing up a copy of the Royal British Legion Scotland Directory of War Memorials which I have. Its something I've been meaning to do as my copy is in tatters! I should be finished in a couple of days and I'll post it here. Its a comprehensive list of civic war memorials and most entries have details of the locations of each memorial.
I thought this might help.

Jim

I had a copy of the same book but I've passed it onto the Scottish Genealogy Society Library. I have taken a note of all the memorials and included them in my lists.

If you have completed your lists though please post them since it may be some time before I can post all of mine and the RBL lists most of the Civic memorials in Scotland.

Regards

Adam

Here is a copy of the 'Directory of War Memorials in Scotland' compiled by the Royal British Legion Scotland. The directory was published in 1990 so some of the details may be out of date by now. There are also some ommissions, the big one being the Isle of Skye. I've included some of these ommited memorials in the list and put the note '(additional)' beside them. Finally there are odd bits that don't make so much sense, they may be typos and in these cases I've copied them exactly as they appeared in the directory and hopefully anyone with local knowledge will be able to make sense of the entry.

I have now completed and posted the last of my district lists and all are linked to the main list above. This means we now have a list of over 2500 memorials covering the whole of Scotland.

That’s the easy part done. Now we’ve got to link the memorials already posted on the forum and update the location details. That may take some time. Derek has been updating the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway lists and Spoons and Ian A have been keeping him busy!

I’m pretty sure I’ve got the majority of the civic memorials in Scotland listed and most of the unit ones as well but there are hundreds of others still out there not on the lists.

Where there are a lot to find are the Church congregation memorials and memorials to individuals in churches and clubs.

Please remember that there are war memorials everywhere. They are not only crosses in a village centre or plaques on a wall commemorating someone who died in a World War or an Imperial Expedition. They can be sports trophies, piping medals, bandstands, a copse of trees, and a hole on a golf course. They can be from the Jacobite Rebellions, the Wars of Independence, from the Roman occupation even.

Please have a look at the lists I’ve provided and see if I’ve missed any. If you suspect a church may have a memorial but you don’t know for sure let me know and I can add it to the list like I’ve done for Lanarkshire, Glasgow and Dunbartonshire.

I’m hoping we can compile a definitive list of Scotland’s War Memorials here and we can then pass on the details of those missing onto the UKNIWM team in London

Regards

Adam

I have found memorials ranging from a whole chapel, to a wooden box, set of gates, candelabra and even a row of cottages! About 20% of the memorials that I have found were not on the original lists and are not listed on UKNIWM (although Dumfries and Galloway may be particularly bad). I have posted a separate thread of all the unlisted memorials I have found.
I would be more than happy if anyone can find more unlisted memorials than I (consider it a challenge Laughing ).
Here's how I found some of mine:
1. Studied maps and realised there was an area of countryside that I did not have a memorial for, went looking and found one
2. Look in every church (don't take their word for it) and ask the minister etc if they have any in back cupboards etc (often from other closed churches)
3. Ask the ministers, local museum, local council offices and any other public buildings (courts etc)
4. Ask in schools (primary as well as secondary), just yesterday I passed a minister in the local hospital and just went up and asked him if he knew of any, in a few minutes he pointed me to a local primary school where I found 4 unlisted memorials
5. Where there are closed churches, try to get access or find where the memorials went
6. Assume that anything with dates 1914-1918 or 1939-1945 is a war memorial unless proved otherwise
7. If a church has 2 entrances, check both for memorials - my local church had only 7 out of 8 listed, presumably because the person listing them entered and left by the same door, ignoring the other
8. I managed to track down a list of all Dumfries and Galloway parishes from 1918 (many have been merged since) and I started with the assumption that each parish on the original list would have had one memorial at least

Any other tips?

Old local newspapers contain information which is extremely important. Often they give details of the unveiling of memorials, names listed etc.
I have details of one memorial in Hawick which has subsequently "disappeared" and, but for me reading about its unveiling, it would probably be consigned to history.

Spoons and Derek

I think it is safe to assume each parish has at least one war memorial, If there isn't one on public display it will more than likely be in the parish church. I have listed a lot of places with a war memorial as 'not known' on this basis

Local newspapers. For Great War memorials look around the years 1920-22 when there was a lot of memorials unveiled. The Scotsman had a special section for WM unveilings. I have already listed some memorials with a year in brackets from finding it in the paper but that is not to say it is still in existence.

Adam, spoons and Derek,
I wonder if an approach to 121 George Street and the RC eqivalent might get some info on Memorials in Parish Churches. I know West End Church, Dundee has the Memorials from four nearby Churches which have closed as well as their own. I also know of two at Blair Atholl Kirk. Should we put a suitable email together??
Aye
