This is my grandfather, my mother immigrated to Austrlaia with her two borthers & her grandmother in 1928. We know very little about our family history. Is it possible to view other records throught this site.

I know my grandfather's name is listed in the war memeorial in Edinburgh Castle, as I fouind it when I visted in 1976.

If you can oifer any advice in tracing his family I would appreciate it, such as his birthday etc.

You could try joining Aberdeen & North East Scotland Family History Society, you can do this on-line.
There are researchers there who could help.
Ancestry.com is another place that you could use.
The address Guestrow is right in the middle of the town.
Old buildings of tenament style living.
Aberdeen Maritime Museum is right where you need to be....try them for more info.

John Johnstone Mackie was born on the 8th of February 1881 at 8 Gallowgate, Aberdeen to John (a Mason's Labourer) and Ann Mackie.
He married fish worker Rachel McAdam Grant in 1905 in Aberdeen. She herself unfortunately died aged just 32 in 1918.

According to www.wrecksite.eu

"On April 2nd, 1916, the British (hired as minesweeper) navy trawler Commandant was sunk on patrol by a mine from the German submarine UC-7 (Georg Haag), off the Sunk lightvessel. 5 persons were killed."

The war return for Trimmer Mackie has listed as his guardian a Mrs Middleton of 21 Guestrow, Aberdeen.

CWGC
Name: MACKIE, JOHN JOHNSTON
Initials: J J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Trimmer
Regiment/Service: Royal Naval Reserve
Unit Text: H.M. Trawler "Commandant."
Age: 34
Date of Death: 02/04/1916
Service No: 460TS
Additional information: Husband of the late Rachel Mackie.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: 23.
Memorial: PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL

The CWGC have omitted the 'E' at the end of his middle name and he was 35, not 34.
I hope this helps fill out some detail. Please PM me for copies of the docs.

Cheers,
Derek.
