Another close up (as close as I can manage) of the group which crowns the top of the cenotaph.
The cenotaph is 25 feet high with a bronze group by Meredith Williams of a mounted crusader flanked by four infantrymen. According to the Paisley Daily Express, July 28th 1924 "The idea which the group is intended to convey is that our men in the great war in their splendid determination were animated by the same spirit as the Crusaders, and were striving towards an ideal similar to that which stimulated them."
The monument was designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, the builders Messrs. Neil McLeod & Sons Limited, and the carving work carried out by Messrs. Allen & Sons, both of Edinburgh. The 228 tons of granite employed was supplied by the Shap Fells Granite Company in Westmorland.
The inscription reads:
"To the glorious memory of the 1,953 men of Paisley who gave their lives in the Great War."
The memorial was unveiled in 1924 before a crowd of 20,000 which filled the square and the newspaper reported that there was a continuous stream of visitors walking around the monument throughout the following week.

Hello,
What a great set of photo's. Don't think I have ever seen this memorial before. Do you know if there is a John W Fraser, pte, RSF listed on the memorial? He was from Paisley, but lived in Glasgow when he died. However he also worked in Edinburgh.
Regards,
Stewart |

Hello Stewart,
There are no names listed on the memorial itself. As far as know there is a memorial book with the roll of honour in the Paisley Library. If memory serves there is also one in Paisley Abbey, although that one is in a glass display case with the page turned every day.
I'm afraid I havn't had time to visit the library, but when I do I'll have a look.

There is a Roll for the Second World War and subsequent conflicts available to buy - I found it on the Waterstones website where it can be ordered.
As for the Great War - I believe there is a book similar to the Glasgow Roll but I'm not sure where it might be kept. |

Here's two women who would be on this memorial (if it had been furnished with name panels) and are likely in the roll of honour book for the second world war.
Isabella Muirhead Hunter, First Aid Post, worker, Paisley,
Agnes Cormie Lochhead, telephonist at a First Aid post, Paisley.
They are in the W.V.S. roll of honour.
