Yes. I photographed the name plates as well. I'll have a look and see whether I can post the photos or have to transcript. I'm in Elgin this weekend so I may get a chance to take a few more close up piccies.

The sculptor was Percy Portsmouth and the memorial was unveiled on Sunday December 4th 1922 by the Duke of Richmond and Gordon.
The Northern Scot Newspaper gave the following description of the memorial before it was unveiled:
The statue in bronze represents a heroic figure of Victory and Peace. The sword in the right hand is festooned with laurel, signifying Victory. The symbol in the raised hand is the torch of living memory surrounded by a laurel wreath, which is supported by little cherubs typifying Peace.
The attitude of the figure will be dignified and courageous, and the head will be slightly uplifted. The statue will be about 7 feet 6 inches from the feet to the top of the head.
The pedestal will be built of local freestone (Greenbrae) and will be erected by an Elgin firm. It will be about 12 feet high and bronze panels will be placed on three sides, containing the names of the fallen and the inscription.
The Elgin coat-of-arms will be placed in bronze just underneath the statue. |

If asked, I will happily post on the forum (or email individuals) that part of the Memorial that contains the details of a specific individual. Furthermore, I would also be prepared to email higher resolution photographs of this War Memorial.

I appear to have 'missed' a couple of plaques! Rather careless. I will resolve this the next time I am in Elgin and try to amend my previous post.

I have edited the list of the fallen to include those names that were covered by plantlife in my original photographs. The flower beds in the vicinity of the memorial are in the process of being replanted - it looks promising!

Has the whole of Moray Council's War Memorial budget been spent on Elgin this year then?

I have just watched 'We were Soldiers'; a Vietnam War film with Mel Gibson. One song in the film caught my attention- sung in the Scots dialect. I did a bit of 'googling' and discovered that the tune is called 'Sgt MacKenzie' and was written by Joseph Kilna Mackenzie in memory of his ggf Sgt Charles Stuart MacKenzie. Sgt MacKenzie is remembered on the Elgin War Memorial.
see wikipedia for details or here for the haunting lament.
