This is the first of a number of posts concerning memorials I am trying to identify from my recently acquired photos of Osborne's memorials (see books section for more details). There are about 110 memorials in all, most of these are war memorials and a small number, perhaps 6 to 8 are Scottish.

I have identified this memorial as coming from Kirriemuir based on the entries for a couple of those named on CWGC. South United Free church it says, now is that the one for St Andrews UKNIWM 5670? or is it an unlisted memorial? does it still exist? if so, where?

The photo is an extract from the catalogue. Note two men have MA after their names, that makes them church ministers, right?

I might post the odd non-Scottish memorial from this album on GWF.

MA is Master of Arts so maybe this is not the man you need. But though I'd give you the kind of info you might get from Glasgow or Edinburgh. This is the entry from Aberdeen Uni:
Name Anderson, James Alexander Rank Lieutenant
Regiment Royal Gloucestershire Hussars (Gloucestershire Yeomanry)
Biography Son of William Anderson ; born Echt, 10 March 1884 ; educated at Echt Public School ; student in Law, 1904-05, he gave promise of a brilliant career in his profession. Previous to the outbreak of war he had served in the Lothian and Border Horse for 11 years, and was called up on 4 August 1914. After serving in France and at Salonika he came home, received a commission, and was gazetted to the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars (Gloucestershire Yeomanry). The rest of his service was passed in Palestine till he returned home in 1919. He died 6 July 1920, of malaria which he had contracted whilst in Macedonia.
Honours
Date of Death 06 July 1920
Burial details Buried at Cramond Parish Churchyard, Edinburgh, North Side, Grave 133.

Thanks Anne, I know it stands for Master of Arts but I thought it might be some ecclesiastical thing as well because almost every minister's grave or memorial I come across has MA (you never see msc). Interesting stuff, but in this instance it is the memorial I am trying to track down, not the man.

Here is another, I have identified this as from a church in Galashiels - catholic? Usual questions, which church, does the memorial still exist etc. Not listed on UKNIWM either.

I think the plaque for Kirriemuir is within St. Andrew's Church, formerly South United Free.

I believe it is pictured bottom right on their website;

It turns out that the first one (South UF) was not 5670 after all.

Received the following today from UKNIWM.

The memorial you attached to this previous email is not actually Ref:5670, as I have seen the photos for that file and they are different. So I have filed it accordingly and it will be used to create a new profile in due course. It is in the same Church though.

If the bronze relief tablet is from Gala then it may be in here:
The Church of Our Lady and St Andrew.
http://www.galashiels.bordernet.co.uk/trail/church.html

However, there is no photo of it here:
http://www.ourladyandstandrew.org.uk/index.php?SK=4a2e12c8d3226bcccf94d6fb04f908bb&W21ID=120

Note the mention of a side altar there which is a memorial to the numerous Polish soldiers stationed in Galashiels during the Second World War.

I've had my vaccinations so I will add it to my "to do" list in Gala. Wink

There is another one of Osborne's in Gala. A quote from a letter of appreciation in the catalogue................

From the Very Revd Canon Rooney, Galashiels, 5th July 1920..........yesterday, Easter Sunday it was unveiled.............the figures of the calvary (sic) group..............

As they say, I'll know it when I see it.

OK, here's another one for you. From the inscription it seems that this plaque is to accompany a Cameronians Roll of Honour in a cabinet. Only problem is that UKNIWM has no such memorial listed. Any idea where it is?

There is a section of Glasgow Cathedral called "Cameronians Corner". It has te laid up colours and may have the Roll of Honour. This tablet may be there.

Another puzzle - this one is for Steel Brothers and Company Ltd, but where were they based? Somewhere in Scotland possibly given the high number of Scottish Regiments?

A lot of the names have no other details on CWGC and the ones that I can find are from all over the place, London, West Kilbride, Laurencekirk and Kilmarnock.

Any info or ideas?

Barrie Duncan may be able to help with the Cameronian tablet?

There is another book "100 years of Steel etc"by HE Braund

Their registered address is/was 75 Westrow Hill, London.
