I notice they saved a bit of money after the Second World War by just adding an 's' to Great War.
I take it the two names at the bottom are the Second World War names.

PTE. GAVIN BUCHANAN.
Gavin Buchanan – age 29 – Private (S/7265) 2nd Battalion, Gordon Highlanders.
Gavin enlisted in Kelso in November 1914 and joined his battalion in France in March 1915 but he was killed three months later when his wire-cutting party was hit by machine gun fire.
Born 1886 in Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland. Son of Gavin and Mary (Bell) Buchanan of Gunsgreenhill, Ayton, Berwickshire. Husband of Agnes Logan (Middlemass) Buchanan of Hapertoun Farm, Kelso and of Corsbie, Earlston, Berwickshire who he married in 1913 in Ednam.
Missing in Action on 18 June 1915 and named on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PTE. RICHARD ECKFORD.
Richard Henrie Eckford – age 21 – Private (6835) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Richard was a chauffeur with Sir R.J. Waldie-Griffith of Hendersyde Park, Ednam when he enlisted in September 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1894 in Cornhill, Berwick-on-Tweed, Northumberland as Richard Lane Henrie. Son of Ellinor (Henrie) Eckford and step-son of James Eckford of 14 Hotspur Avenue, Whitley Bay, Northumberland who had married in 1896 in Coldstream, Berwickshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial and on the Whitley Bay War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES HENRY FAIRGRIEVE.
James Henry Fairgrieve – age 32 – Private (843) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
James worked on the Hendersyde Estate in Ednam and was a member of the Territorial 4th KOSB. He was mobilised in August 1914 and he landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but died of his wounds two weeks later.
Born 1883 Kelso, Roxburghshire. Son of the late James Fairgrieve (died 1914) and Margaret (Gray) Fairgrieve of Ferneyhill Cottage, Ednam.
Died of Wounds on 18 June 1915 and buried in Lancashire Landing Cemetery, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.

PTE. JOHN GLEED.
John Gleed – age 30 – Private (5687) 13th Battalion, Australian Infantry.
John emigrated to Australia in November 1913 and was a coach builder living at Coogee, Sydney, New South Wales when he enlisted in January 1916. He sailed from Sydney in May and joined his battalion in Belgium in October 1916. He was killed at Guedecourt, near Bapaume but his burial place was lost.
Born 1887 at Hendersyde Park, Ednam as John Charles Gleed. Son of the late Jemima (Logie) Gleed (died 1906 in Ednam) and of Mark Gleed of Hendersyde Park and of Dean Park Street, Edinburgh.
Killed in Action on 4 February 1917 and named on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Somme, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PTE. WILLIAM HERKES.
William Herkes – age – Private (6770) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
In 1901 William, aged 16, was a ploughman at Newtonlees in Ednam and by 1911 the family had moved to Roxburgh. William landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 but was killed a month later during the battle of Achi Baba Nullah.
Born 1884 Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of Robert and Eliza Morrison (Sheppard) Herkes of Ednam, of Roxburgh and of Sucklawridge, Makerstoun, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 12 July 1915 and named on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PTE. WILLIAM McCRAW.
William McCraw – age 22 – Private (206111) "C" Battalion, Tank Corps.
William enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery in May 1915 and as Gunner (961) he was posted to the 6th (Armoured Car) Battery of the Motor Machine Gun Service in France in October 1915. This later became part of the Machine Gun Corps (Motors) In late 1916, many men of the MGC(M) were transferred to the Heavy Section, MGC, which in July 1917 became the Tank Corps.
Born 1895 in Eccles, Berwickshire. Son of Robert and Margaret (Slater) McCraw of Redden Cottage, Ednam and of Kersheugh, Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.
Missing in Action on 31 July 1917 and named on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial together with his brother Alexander McCraw, Private (66102) 141st Company, Machine Gun Corps who died on 30 November 1917 who is named on the nearby Sprouston Parish War Memorial.

2/LT. ALEXR. AULD McDONALD.
Not listed by CWGC.
Alexander Auld McDonald – age 26 – Flight Cadet (171550) Royal Air Force.
He was granted an honorary commission as a Second Lieutenant after his demobilisation and death. (Source: London Gazette 19/3/1920 p.3438)
Alexander was educated at Ednam School, where his father was the headmaster, at Kelso High School and at Queen's University in Toronto. He had joined the Canadian Bank of Commerce in August 1910 and was a bank clerk at the Kamloops branch in British Columbia when he was drafted for military service as Private (2022538) in the 1st Depot Battalion of the British Columbia Regiment on 9 April 1918 but he was immediately discharged to serve with the Royal Flying Corps. He joined the Royal Air Force as Flight Cadet (171550) on 18 April but was discharged as being "surplus to requirements (not having suffered impairment since entry into the Service)" on 2nd January 1919. Alexander died of pneumonia in Vancouver three days later.
Born 1892 at Freswick in Canisbay, Caithness. Son of the late Helen (Mowat) McDonald (died 1909 in Ednam) and of George McDonald of the Schoolhouse, Ednam.
Died on 5 January 1919 and buried in Vancouver.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial (as Flight Cadet) on the Kelso High School memorial and on the Canadian Bank of Commerce Roll of Honour.


SIG. ANDREW NAIRN. M.M.
Andrew Nairn, Military Medal – age 23 – Private (200586) 1/4th (Border) Battalion, King's Own Scottish Borderers.
Andrew was a ploughman at Springwells Farm near Greenlaw in Berwickshire when he enlisted as Private (6884) in October 1914. He landed with his battalion at Gallipoli in June 1915 and survived the battle of Achi Baba Nullah in July. He was a battalion signaller and later served in Egypt and in Palestine where he was awarded a M.M. for mending wire entanglements under fire at Gaza in April 1917 but he was killed in November by the bursting of a shell.
Born 1894 at Oxenrig, Coldstream, Berwickshire. Son of James Nairn and Mary Margaret (Sandilands) Nairns of Kaimflat, Ednam.
Killed in Action on 23 November 1917 and buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.

Robert Patterson – age 35 – Private (S/16086) 10th Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)
Robert was hallman at Floors Castle, Kelso when he enlisted.
Born 1880 in Maxton, Roxburghshire. Son of James and Anne (Cockburn) Patterson of Ednam. Husband of Elizabeth Ann (Niven) Patterson (from 1919 Mrs William Henderson) of Orchard Cottage, Kelso who he married in 1912 in Kelso.
Missing in Action on 9 May 1917 and named on the Doiran Memorial, Salonica, Greece.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PTE. GEORGE REID.
George Reid – age 25 – Private (18172) 15th Battalion (1st Edinburgh) Royal Scots.
George was living at 26 Robertson Avenue, Gorgie, Edinburgh when he enlisted.
Born 1890 in Ednam. Son of the late Charles Reid (died 1897) and of Jane (Fox) Reid of Kelso (died 1902).
He named his brother Thomas Murdoch Reid as the executer of his will. In 1911 Thomas, aged 14, was living with his uncle Thomas Reid in Ednam Village.
Missing in Action on 1 July 1916 and named on the Thiepval Memorial to the Missing of the Somme, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial.


PTE. JAMES RICHARDSON.

PTE. ROBERT RICHARDSON.
Robert Richardson – age 40 – Private (865430) 44th Battalion, Canadian Infantry.
Robert emigrated to Canada in 1911 and was farming near Brandon in Manitoba when he enlisted there in April 1916. He sailed from Halifax, Nova Scotia in April 1917 and joined his battalion in France in July but was killed near Lens six weeks later.
Born 1877 in Kirkhope, Selkirkshire. Son of Jasper and Isabella (Shiel) Richardson of Hardenmains, Oxnam, Roxburghshire and of Newtonlees, Ednam.
Missing in Action on 22 August 1917 and named on the Vimy Memorial, France.


PTE. GEORGE THOMAS WHITTLE.
George Thomas Whittle – age 19 – Private (201943) 1/6th Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
George was a gardener at Ladykirk Hall, Berwickshire when he enlisted as Private (4070) in October 1916. He was posted to his battalion in France in November 1917 but he died in the 54th Casualty Clearing Station at Aire. Born 1898 at Eglingham, New Bewick, Glendale, Northumberland. Son of the late Thomas Whittle (died 1903) and of Mary (Thompson) Whittle, and step-son of Walter Young of Eden Hall, Ednam and of Hoselaw, Ednam who had married Mary in 1906 in Rothbury, Northumberland.
Died of Wounds on 9 May 1918 and buried in Aire Communal Cemetery, France.
Also named on the Kelso War Memorial and on the Ladykirk Parish War Memorial as George Whitlee, A.S.H.

1939 – 1945


MARINE DAVID M. L. ELLIOT.
Note: Named by CWGC as David Mons Lorrain Elliott.
David Mons Louvain Elliot – age 28 – Marine (PLY/X 101537) H.M.S. Repulse, Royal Marines.
David had been a gardener with Lord Home at The Hirsel, Coldstream. He was a marine when he married in 1941 and he gave his address as Sydenham Lodge, Kelso. (Ednam Parish)
The Royal Navy battleship HMS Prince of Wales and battlecruiser HMS Repulse were sunk by land-based bombers and torpedo bombers of the Imperial Japanese Navy off the east coast of Malaya. David survived the sinking of the “Repulse” but died as a Prisoner of War on the Burma-Siam Railway at Tasao No.1 Camp. He was re-interred at Kanchanaburi in February 1946.
Born 1914 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. Son of Robert and Helen or Nellie Hain (Couper) Elliot. Husband of Dorothy Jean (Thorburn) Elliot who he married in 1941 in Newington, Edinburgh.
Died on Service on 29 June 1943 and buried in Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, Thailand.


PTE. WILLIAM GALBRAITH.
William Galbraith – age 30 – Private (3195692) 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment.
Allied forces landed near Salerno on 8-9 September 1943 and there was fierce fighting for some days in the bridgehead that they established.
Born 1913 in Sprouston, Roxburghshire. Son of George and Janet (Halliday) Galbraith who married in 1910 in Sprouston. Husband of Marion Turnbull (Rae) Galbraith of Duns, Berwickshire who he married in 1937 in Ednam.
William was employed at Springhall Farm, Ednam and Marion was at Highridgehall Farm, Ednam when they married at the latter place. This farm is close to Birgham village in Berwickshire.
Killed in Action on 9 September 1943 and buried in Salerno War Cemetery, Italy.
Also named on the Eccles Parish Church stained-glass window and on the Birgham village memorial in Eccles Parish, Berwickshire.
