Among sculptor Alexander Carrick's business papers at the National Monument Record of Scotland Office in Edinburgh, Manuscript Collection 22, there is the copy of a letter from Carrick to the Chief Constable regarding his work on this memorial which he described as being Sicilian Marble. |

Ayr Burgh Police had its own police force from 1845 until the merger with Ayrshire Constabulary on 16th may 1968 . Ayr Burgh Police had then 112 officers . I will see my friend who is ex Ayr Burgh and also ex Ayrshire constabulary/Strathclyde Police to see if Ayr Burgh had a war memorial for its WW1 and WW2 officers ...
Kilmarnock Burgh Police was in existance from 1846 until it merged with Ayrshire constabulary on 16th may 1968 (same merger as Ayr Burgh Police )
Ayrshire Constabulary from 1839 to merging to become part of Strathclyde Police on 16th May 1975
Dont know which Chief Constable it was who Mr Carrick wrote to

This memorial is not the one designed by Carrick. It was in the original Ayrshire Constabulary HQ in Charlotte Street, Ayr and was white marble. It is now lost, having disappeared sometime between the amalgamation of the county and burgh forces in 1968 and the establishment of Strathclyde Police in 1975, when the new county HQ was built in King Street, Ayr, and the present memorial was sited there, commemorating the fallen from both the former Ayrshire Constabulary and Kilmarnock Burgh forces. It is now thought that the original memorial was lost during the removal of a chimney complex in the former HQ building some time after it was vacated in 1975. |
