Hi,

Wondering if anyone has ever come across this chap on any of the memorials in and around Aberdeen. He was the RSM of the 2nd Battalion Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) and was killed on the 24th of October, 1916. He won the DCM and was MiD in the Boer War and won the MC for his actions at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle.

CWGC has him recorded as a native of Aberdeen but I'm afraid I don't have any further info as to exactly where he may be commemorated.

Be extremely grateful if folks near Aberdeen could keep a wee eye for him when photographing the memorials in that area.

Thanks,

Barrie

Sorry Barrie
I had a look at my data for Aberdeen, Gordon and Kincardine & Deeside but no luck. My data isn't complete though and I don't have names for the City of Aberdeen itself so he may be there, I'll keep it in mind.
I did find a John Chalmers but he is listed as a WWII casualty on the Finzean memorial.
Good luck in your search.

Thanks for checking Jamie, much appreciated. As I said, I don't really have much info to go on, but at least I can narrow it down a bit now anyway.

Cheers,

Barrie

Barrie,

I checked the war memorial outside St Mary's RC Cathedral in Huntly Street Aberdeen, today. Your man is not listed there. I have the WWI names if anyone wants them and could get the WWII names if required.

His medals, however, are in the National War Museum in Edinburgh Castle. They are in the last section before the temporary exhibition space.

Barrie,

I had a look at the Aberdeen & North East Scotland Family History website and there is a John Chalmers on the war memorial at Tyrie, near Fraserburgh. The only other info online is that he was killed 1918. If you're not in Aberdeen I could pop into the Family History shop tomorrow and look it up for you - this will give you the full inscription and we will be able to tell if this is your man.

Regards
Susan

Sorry Barrie, the John Chalmers at Tyrie was a Private in the Gordon Highlanders.
