Peebles (Including Broughton, Drumelzier, Eddleston, Innerleithen, Kirkurd, Lyne & Meggat, Manor, Newlands, Skirling, Stobo, Traquair, Tweedsmuir and Walkerburn)- Tweeddale District
The Peebles war memorial is sited in the Courtyard of the Chamber Institute on the High Street, near the Tourist Information. It features a hexagonal shrine of white stone surmounted by a dome and flanked by wall designed by Mr. B.N.H. Orphoot. Standing inside the shrine is a cross in Sicilian limestone, inlaid with Sicilian mosaics. The bronze memorial tablets are set into the walls at the back of the shrine and these are framed with Sicilian mosaics.
The memorial was unveiled on the 5th October 1922 by Earl Haig. As part of the war memorial scheme the Morelands Military Hospital which served wounded servicemen through the Great War was fully re-furbished, extended and re-equipped to provide a hospital for the community and this was also inaugurated on the same day. Of £20,000 raised by the Peebles area £15,000 was contributed to the hospital, and £5,000 to the shrine.
Sorry about the quality of the pictures of the bronze tablets but I have transcribed the names. Hopefully someone can provide something better.

Jim

That's a lot of typing! At least one area here has it's own memorial, Innerleithen.

It looks like a very impressive memorial. Unfortunately the gates have always been closed on the frew times I have been in Peebles.

Regards

Adam

I had a similar problem (closed gates) when I wanted to photograph the memorial in Northampton (it's south of the border Laughing ) and I got the contact details of the local branch of the British Legion and when they heard why I wanted it, they got hold of the key and came along during the lunch hour to open it up for me. Brilliant! - worth a try if you are going to be there at a known date/time.

I really do have a soft spot for the Peebles Memorial.
It is quite unique.

Two of the fallen in WW1 were awarded the Victoria Cross: Piper James Richardson (age 20, Seaforths, British Columbia), who played his men 'over the top', under fire, at the Somme in 1916; and Lt Thomas Colyer Ferguson (age 21, Northamptons), who, with a few men, took an enemy trench and two machine-gun posts during a single engagement at Ypres in 1917.

I'll gladly take you up on that offer. Is there anything on a John Dunlop Anderson? Signalman on board HMS Bittern, died 4/4/18.

This CD-rom sounds interesting. Is it readily available?

I visited Peebles on Thursday and I have to say that the photographs here do not do justice to this memorial. Truly stunning, and very well kept.

The museum next to it has a free leaflet about the memorial, as well as a booklet for sale with more information on it. Both well worth getting hold of.

I too got booklet and leaflet. Was annoyed to find out later there was also a CD.
Malcolm kindly gave me this link
http://www.visittweeddale.com/what_to_do/tweeddale_museums.php

Reply I got is
We sell a CD-Rom which is a reproduction of a publication by local doctor from 1920s giving brief biographies of all those listed on war memorial from First World War. It is available for purchase at £20 + £5 postage and packing.
