St Fergus - Banff & Buchan, Peterhead District
UKNIWM Ref No. 8629

A rustic grey granite celtic cross with wheel head standing on a low rustic base. The commemoration and names of the WWI dead are set in black lead letters on the face of the cross shaft, with the names of the WWII dead set on a dressed grey granite tablet set into the face of the plinth.

The memorial stands in front of the kirk.

The photographs below are supplied and reproduced by kind permission of Stan Bruce. The article below is also written by Stan Bruce. Copyright Stan Bruce.

St Fergus
The war memorial is situated at the front of the parish church, within a churchyard encircled with trees. It commemorates the dead of World War One and Two. It is an elaborately carved granite Celtic cross with a wreath on the centre of the cross, all sitting on a large granite base carved to resemble a pile of rocks. It is engraved on the front of the shaft with names of the dead from WW1 and with “In grateful and affectionate remembrance of the St. Fergus men who laid down their lives for King and Country and the righteous cause in the Great War 1914 – 1919”. and also with “Their name liveth for evermore”. The names of the dead from WW2 are inserted on a granite slab fitted to the base which is engraved “By these things men live”.
