Can anyone identify this war memorial for me please?
The postcard was amongst my grandmother's photos and nobody in the family recognises it. I know from library collections that it is not in Dumfries and Galloway where the family are from. I've also checked out all the photos on this site and another in England.

I think this may be in South Ayrshire. It's such a unique looking memorial. If memory serves me right it is the Symington War Memorial.
The memorial sits at a junction opposite a very nice pub / restaurant.
OS Ref: NS 384 313
Symington is just off the A77 between Kilmarnock and Ayr.
I haven't been to Symington in about 8 years so I can't be 100% sure.

I've just goggled 'Symington Ayrshire' and memorialman's webpage for Symington was one of the options.
It isn't a complete photo on the Roll-of-Honour webpage but I think it is clear enough to confirm it is Symington.

The memorial has been transcribed so hopefully one of the names can give a clue as to why the photo was in a family collection.

The first name on the Roll-of-Honour transcription is a Captain Charles Edward Baird, Seaforth Highlanders. The family is connected to Forse in Caithness and Edrom in Berwickshire in the text.

has Captain Charles E Baird as being listed on the Forse and Latheron War memorials
Latheron has already been posted and Capt. Baird is the first one listed.

The Caithness RoH has him on Forse's memorial, it would be interesting to know if he is on Edrom's one as well. That would mean he's listed on memorials in the far North, South-East and South-West of Scotland.

I still have no idea why Granny had this postcard though as there are no names on the memorial that fit my researches so far. I'll keep digging around in Register House to see if there have been marriages into the family and also pass it on to a relative in Engand who has got much more stuff on other branches of the family than me.
There are no entries for Stewartry memorials yet, so I will see what I can do to help there. When the weather is better I was intending to go back up to Durisdeer to clean some gravestones, so I'll take my camera with me and do that one too, unless someone gets there before me.
Any photos that I do post will be free for anyone to take, I'm not bothered about copyrighting; I'm hardly in David Bailey's league!

It was lucky it was such a distinctive memorial.

It would be great if you could get some more D & G memorials on the forum. The great thing about adding photos is that even if the memorial you photograph has no relevance to your own research it may hopefully help someone else out.
