I have previously thought that Rolls of Honour (including names of those who served as well as those who died) came into use in WW1. However today I have received a photo of a Boer War Roll of Honour from Blackheath in London (brass on wood). Do we have anything similar in Scotland, I haven't noticed any on the forum?

Incidentally, if anyone wants a photo of the Blackheath memorial, PM me with your email address.

There's several books:

"The Muster Roll of Angus" lists everyone from that county, together with a photograph.

"The Military History of Perthshire" does the same for that county.

There's another for a county up North, can't remember off-hand.

I have all of these if anyone wants a lookup.

But obviously not until I move house....

Sorry I took so long to check this: it's Banffshire. Lists all the men of the County who served. Also lists any decorations awarded.

There's a copy in the National Library of Scotland, which I have transcribed so I can do look-ups for anyone interested.

There are some photos of this memorial if you use the search you'll find them. Anne

Ah, but the one in Edzell has only the names of those who died like most memorials. My question was about Rolls of Honour with names of all who served. The one in Perth also has only the names of the dead.

Ah, then you'll want the books I've mentioned above, which lists everyone.

The Perthshire books is actually not specifically Boer War, and has a number of men previous to that, including Indian Mutiny and Crimean veterans.

Fred,

The book I couldn't remember was "Soldiers of Banffshire", which lists the men of Banffshire, as I mentioned above.

This Sword of the North - is this another Boer War Roll? Which part of Scotland does it cover?

Sorry folks, Sword of The North covers the Great War only. It was written by a Caithness minister, Dugald MacEchern, who served in the reserves and covers all the Caithness parishes plus all the TF units from the North as well as a bit about every Seaforth battalion.

It sounds a lot better than it actually is but there are lots of photographs.
