WMR 71585
OS Map Ref NX 97133 76272

The memorial is in Greyfriars church, Dumfries. It was the Regimental church for KOSB and also contains laid-up colours.

I wonder what the story is behind this plaque?
A sergeant at 19 and in the 4th Bn. KOSB when from Dumfries?

I've looked the name up and the only match I can find is here:
http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_details.aspx?casualty=1645925

Pte William Kirkpatrick, 1/5th KOSB kia Gaza.

I know it was my post, but I only photograph them, I don't research them.
Do you think it could be his father's battalion or something?

Note the plaque says 4th Reserve Territorial and CWGC puts him in 1/5th Bn.

Was 4th Reserve Bn the old 3/5th KOSB? It will need more research. I've read of a 21 year old RSM in a TA Bn in 1940 who ended the war as a Major.

Sgt Kirkpatrick' s parents also had some money to be able to erect a plaque in the church so why was he good enough to be a Sergeant at 19 but not commissioned?

Questions, questions...

Adam

Yes, the 4th Reserve Bn absorbed the old 3/5th KOSB on 1st Sep 1916 (see: http://www.sonsofgalloway.org.uk/5thkosb/reservelines.html).

My records suggest that he enlisted about 14th Oct 1914, and being about 16 or 17 years old was probably held back until later in the war. The only thing that doesn't tally is his rank, although it is possible that he had some sort of acting/temporary rank in the 4th (Res) Bn. since he had been enlisted for over two years.
