A super Memorial and the village has the best seafood restaurant in Scotland, The Creel. Two good reasons for visiting it.

The sculptor Alex Carrick's mother, Elizabeth Leith, came from South Ronaldsay. She moved to work at a house called Holylee near Peebles at some time in the 1870's. The Leiths were a family of tailors and Elizabeth was a talented dress maker who's work was in great demand in Musselburgh were the sculptor was born in 1882. The family seems to have maintained strong links with the Orkneys and Carrick visited the islands as a child. It was while his uncle John Leith was taking him for a walk along the shore that he found a piece of driftwood and he took out his knife and showed the young boy how to whittle out a model boat from it. It was Carrick's first ever sculpture and its good to think the community gave him the chance to carve the soldier for the war memorial years later (he also studied the architecture and monuments of Saint Magnus Cathedral as a student and later as a sculptor carried out restoration works on the building). Carrick also met his wife when he was getting off the boat at Kirkwall to spend his holidays with another branch of the Leith family in Stromness.
The Saint Margaret's Hope soldier is almost identical to the figure he carved for the Lochawe memorial in Argyll.
