STRICHEN
UKNIWM Ref: 8632

Address
TOWN HALL
STRICHEN
GRAMPIAN
SCOTLAND

Type: CROSS
Other Location Details: CENTRE OF VILLAGE IN FRONT OF TOWN HALL

OS Map Ref: NJ 945 555

A fine memorial cross of Aberdeen granite.
Access in front of the memorial's main inscription, facing onto the main road, is very restricted due to the positioning of the seats. They appear to be a modern addition.

Fraser Mitchell of Strichen has passed me a copy of the 1920 newspaper report on the unveiling of the Strichen war memorial but he has no date for the piece of newspaper report

STICHEN MEMORIAL UNVEILED :

A Monument in Memory of the Men in the Village and Parish of Strichen who fell in the Great War was unveiled on Wednesday by CAPT ROBERT PHILP, MC , 9th Scottish Rifles . Erected on a prominent site near the Town Hall the memorial takes the form of a monument of the village cross type. It is of beautifully axed Aberdeen granite , is surmounted by a cross , and is the handwork of Messrs Henry Hutcheon , Ltd , Sculptors , Constitution Street , Aberdeen.

There was a large attendance at the unveiling ceremony . After the reading of a passage of Scriptures by the Rev A. J. A. Falconer , Mr C. W. Sleigh called upon CAPT PHILIP to unveil the monument .

The Rev A.A. Wilson then led in prayer , and the benediction was pronounced by the Rev P. M. Buchanan . After Mr Joseph Ritchie , Peterhead , had sounded the "Last Post ", Mr James McLean placed a beautiful wreath on the base of the monument. About 40 names are inscribed on the monument , and underneath are the words - "They Died that we might Live ."

(Patrick w Anderson ).
