Each memorial has (or should have) a reference number on the UK National Inventory of War Memorials (http://www.ukniwm.org.uk/).

I have taken to posting that when I post a photo because for anyone who wants to know more about a memorial (or wants to find it), that should be the first port of call.

I am sure that I have one or two that aren't listed, so they will not have a reference. Tip, if you are using UKNIWM site to look for a memorial, use the simple search, put the town/village in 'Place or Building Name' and pick it from the list. A good way to find new local memorials as well!

See also this thread in the Useful Links topic.

There are a lot of Scottish memorials missing from the UKNIWM database. This is down to two reasons. 1. The information is mainly collected by volunteers and if there are no volunteers in an area then memorials will not be recorded.

2. Originally the Scottish work was being co-ordinated by an organistation called something like the Scottish War Memorial Research Group. They had a lot more information that the UKNIWM but not all of it seems to have been passed onto the team in London.

It is a very good site and I have passed them information myself but be careful if using it because some of the data they have is inaccurate.
