Great photos Roxy.

This splendid memorial, of Creetown granite, was the work of Messrs Stewart & Co, Aberdeen and unveiled in 1923. It is very similar to the mourning soldiers at New Elgin and Tarland. New Elgin was carved by Robert Warrack Morrison.
Morrison was employed by Morren & Co, Aberdeen but did a number of commissioned works for Stewart & Co including Tarland.

Private Alexander Wood, 242029, 1st Batt. Gordon Highlanders, died 26th September 1917 at Zonnebek, Passchendale. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Panel 135/136 at Tyne Cot.

As well as this commemoration on Portsoy Memorial he is also mentioned on the Fraserburgh Memorial as he lived, worked and joined up in the Broch.

He was born in Portsoy 2nd April 1885, second son of William Wood, Portknockie (Wildie Post) and Elizabeth Margaret Gardiner (of Cullen).
He appears on the 1891 census at Schoolhendry St, and 1901 in Seatown, but the family home was later 3 Wood Street, Portsoy.
Alexander (Alicky Post) became a Cooper and married Isabella Sim in Fraserburgh in January 1910.
Isabella's brothers Thomas and John were in the Gordons so this is possibly why he joined the Army instead of a Naval Service; certainly the rest of the Woods were all sea-faring.

Isabella was widowed with five children; her parents helped with their upbringing and she worked as a herring gutter.

Thanks for that post. That's one more name on a memorial that has been turned into a real person for me.

Thanks, Paul. That's just a brief synopsis.
I just wish I'd been able to find out all the stuff I now have before my father in law died. He didn't know his father or anything about his death, but we wrote to Commonwealth Graves Commission about 25 years ago and found some basic information.

I'm not sure but the James Wood, Mate, Merchant Services, on the WW2 part of the memorial could be Alexander's brother James.
I know he died off the Isle of Bute in 1944 and he was a Mate in the Merchant Navy. However, the cause of death was "Lost Overboard" so it could be another James Wood as nothing on the certificate suggested it was war-related.
