Thanks for posting these pics.

Pte Andrew Doyle, M.M, 12th HLI is of interest to me.

Stewarty sent me the following from the
Kirkcudbrightshire Advertiser, Friday, May 11, 1917, page 4, column C

Private ANDREW DOYLE, Military Medal, H.L.I., killed on 25th April, at
the age of 21, was a son of Mrs Doyle, Dalry. Before enlisting in
September, 1914, Private Doyle was an apprentice baker, and in civil
and military life was a general favourite. His superior officer,
writing to Mrs Doyle, says he was one of the bravest and pluckiest of
men, and died as he had lived, scorning all danger. For previous
bravery on 5th, 10th, and 11th April, he was awarded the Military Medal
only a few days after his death.

Today I happened to meet a Mr Cowan Ferguson who is still the local registrar and it turns out that Elma Wood (listed on the memorial under WW2, NAAFI) was his sister in law.

he was away serving in the KOSB for 7 years himself so all he could really say about her is that she served in several places during the war with the NAAFI and she died from Addison's disease.

Robert James Clark is the first named on Dalry war memorial. He was the son of Hugh and Esther Clark and lived at Craigielea, Main Street, Dalry, almost opposite where the memorial now stands. He was a joiner and worked with his father (also a joiner) and would have been a pupil at Dalry school. He had 2 brothers and 4 sisters, his brother Hugh also served but returned safely.

He joined 6th Battalion the Gordon Highlanders in January 1916, went to France in July and earned the British War and Victory medals. Robert was killed on 1st November the same year at the age of just 20.

Robert Clark is buried in France in a war cemetery alongside his comrades
