The previoulsy posted group photo is that of officers of the 4th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, taken at Bedford on 5th November 1914, just before they left for France.

Fallen

Front Row:
seated third from left - Major Robertson (killed at Neuve Chapelle); seated fourth left - Captain Sir John Fowler (killed 22/06/18 )

Middle Row:
standing first left - 2nd Lieut P. B. MacIntyre (killed 03/08/1917); standing third left - Lieut. Colin Cameron (killed 11.04.1918); standing 6th left - 2nd Lieut. Andrew Fraser (killed Fontaine, Notre Dame); standing 2nd from right - 2nd Lieut. D. W. Daman, England (killed 24/05/1915)

Back Row:
standing 2nd from left - Lieut. MacMillan (killed neuve Chapelle); standing third left 2nd Lieut. A. J. Railton, Buxton (killed Aubers Ridge); standing fifth left - 2nd Lieut. C. Tennant, Glasgow (killed Aubers Ridge); standing 6th left 2nd Lieut. M. A. Fitzroy, Rugby (kiled 27/04/1915)

*As a coincidence, and unknown to me when loaned the book - a forebear is also included in the group photo - standing back row far left, 2nd Lieut (later Major) William Shaw Dewar, M.C. - whose father was my gg uncle Alex Dewar. Alex Dewar was Town Clerk at Dingwall for over half-a-century. From his obituary in 1917 (Going slightly off topic here, my apologies)
Mr Dewar had been a prominent and greatly respected citizen of Dingwall, and his death will not only be regretted by all classes in the community but by all natives of the town in all parts of the world. For over half-a-century Mr Dewar had been closely associated with the public life of the burgh, contributing in no small degree to its material progress, and promoting the comfort and happines of its people.
Mr Dewar was a native of Dull, Perthhsire, where his father was for many years head estate forrester to Sir Rober Menzies.

William Shaw Dewar also went on to be Town Clerk at Dingwall for nearly fifty years;

ROSS-SHIRE JOURNAL: 04.10.1963
Major W S Dewar, TD, solicitor, Allanfield, Dingwall, who has retired after 46 years’ service as Town Clerk of Dingwall, was signally honoured in the Council Chambers, where he was presented with the Freedom of the Ancient and Royal Burgh of Dingwall. The ceremony was entirely private at Major Dewar’s request, as he had just recovered from a serious illness. Provost Alexander Macrae conferred the Freedom on Major Dewar, who was deeply touched by the honour bestowed on him.

Mark

I recognised Murdo Laing's name as a man with a Sutherland connection and I found him in my lists. I've edited your post (page 83 of the RoH) with what I know of him.

I'll see if I can find the time to compare my lists with this roll. That's two men with Sutherland connections I've found so far and with Assynt being not far from Lochbroom there may be more.

Interestingly Alan Gilmour is the only one without a biography which is shame because I'd like to know his connection to the area.

Adam
