In a recent post Adam listed the memorials within Edinburgh. I would be very interested in a picture of the memorial listed below if a member happened to be in St Giles with a camera.

many thanks

Jim

Edinburgh, Gordon Highlanders, 19th C , Location- St Giles High Kirk, High Street , UKNIWM Ref no: 8767

I have a number of St Giles photographs, but I think this one might be in the area which has recently undergone some renovation work.

It's the area with all the Victorian memorials, so I haven't been able to photograph any of the Boer War memorials either.

I think however it may be open to the public again so next time I'm there I'll get a photo if no-one else has.

I did take some photos of this memorial but they were very poor and all the names were blurred in my photos.
St Giles is a very difficult place to get photos is in. Most churches are like that in my experience. Brass plaques and poor lighting do not make for good photos.

Well I think I have one, pretty poor quality but the names are readable. Only problem is that some of the text is red printed and the plaque is brass, my camera didn't like that combination. If you would like the photo, PM me and I will mail it, it's a 5MB file and needs to be because of the quality.

I think the one you want is Gordons, Afghanistan and Boer war? There are errors in the listing for a few memorials in this area so the UKNIWM number (currently 8767) may change following my survey.

I have a total of 16 high-res photos of this memorial and it reaches a new level of unphotographability (if that is a word) - the inscriptions are on hammered brass! You can certainly read some of the names from the various pictures but I don't think all.

pm me with your address if you would like a CD with the photos, otherwise I will be posting the best of them in lower res but this will have to wait until I resolve the issue with the numbers.

Paul, many thanks for the offer of the High Res pictures on a CD. I think I would like to wait before asking you to go to that trouble. If you are able to post lower res of the better ones at some point in the future I will get a sense of what they look like and possibly take you up on your offer at a later time.

How I envy you being able to go to St Giles whenever you want

Jim
