West Wemyss - Kirkcaldy District
The West Wemyss war memorial is a shrine constructed in sandstone across what appears to have origianlly been the entrance gateway to the old kirk. The flanking pillars bear the date 1703 which I assume is the date of the construction of the kirk itself. The memorial has three bronze tablets bearing the commemoration and names of the dead, with a shield and lion rampant carved in the sandstone above, and a wreath and the words 'PRO PATRIA' in bronze beneath.
The inscription reads
THIS MONUMENT
RECORDING THEIR NAMES
IS DEDICATED TO
THE HONOURED MEMORY OF
THOSE WHO WENT OUT FROM
THE BURGH OF BARONY
OF WESTER WEMYSS
IN THE GREAT WAR
1914 - 1918

Great amount of detail they've added for each name. Would make researching this one a doddle. |

These are more of Gary Wood's photos so I'm afraid I can't give any more details.
The name plaques give a lot of detail, name, rank, unit, manner and date of death. More than enough for anyone researching the names. |

WMR 84109.
According to the Historic Scotland listing there is a WW2 memorial inside the church which I can't find on this forum, or listed anywhere else. |
