Another post I’d hoped not to make. A Glasgow man has become the latest soldier to be killed in Afghanistan.

Captain John McDermid of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland, The Royal Highland Fusiliers, was killed when a blast hit his patrol in Sangin, Helmand Province.
In his career he had served in Berlin, Canada, Kenya, Cyprus and Belize. He conducted two tours in Bosnia, one in Kosovo, four in Northern Ireland and one in Iraq.
He was in Afghanistan as a member of the ISAF Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team, tasked with training the Afghan National Army

He was married with three children.

Family and friends of Private Jamie Kerr, the Cowdenbeath soldier killed in Iraq, will gather on Sunday to see his name added to the town's War Memorial.

A short service conducted by Reverend Alex Forsyth will begin at 2pm. Fife’s provost, Frances Melville, and representatives from The Black Watch, 3rd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland will also attend.

Private Kerr ,20, was killed by an explosion on Thursday 28th June. The blast also claimed the lives Private Scott Kennedy ,20, of Oakley and Corporal Paul Joszko, 28, of Mountain Ash.

Here are photos of the 3 listed men from the Nimrod crash from an article in the Daily Record of 5 Dec 2007. The article states that Stephen Beattie from Dundee was the only Scot on board.
If I find that any of these are added to memorials, then I will of course post the photos there but in the meantime, this seems a suitable place.

Whilst BT was the only Scot on board XV230, the other crew members (with the notable exception of Joe Windall and Ollie Dicketts) had spent many years between them living in Moray.

They are sorely missed.

Just as this thread was being updated by Spoons and Roxy the other day another Scot was injured in Iraq.

Sadly today Guardsman Stephen Ferguson from Lanarkshire died of his injuries in the UK. I have updated the first post in this thread with the details that have so far been released. I will update them if more details of his family and home are released.

Sadly we have to report another Scots death in Afghanistan.

SAC Graham Livingstone, 23, of the Royal Air Force Regiment was from Glasgow.

I was tracing and photographing six of seven Fife men listed below, at Glenrothes, Kelty, Lochgelly and Cowdenbeath, but could not find any mention at Dunfermline memorial of ;

"Gray, Stuart Robert Tennant
Sergeant, 1st Bn The Black Watch
Killed in suicide attack 04/11/2004 Near Camp Dogwood, Iraq
Born Dunfermline, Fife Aged 31. Son of Mrs Mary Gray. Husband of Wendy Gray
Listed on the Dunfermline War Memorial, Fife"

I was viewing the WWI and WWII memorial in Monastery Street facing the Abbey/ Palace.
Is there another site in Dunfermline ? Can the entry be confirmed by anyone who has recorded it?

Thank you, I have now seen that there are indeed two memorials in Dunfermline. Sorry to have posted a needless call for assistance. Luckily I have family in town so not a wasted journey.

I'm very sad to say yet another name has been added to the list of Scottish soldiers killed in Afghanistan. Corporal Barry Dempster from Ayrshire, a medic from The Royal Highland Fusiliers, 2nd Bn. Royal Regiment of Scotland was killed last Friday whilst on a joint UK-Afghan patrol.

Regards

Sad to read of the death in Afghanistan of WO2 Gary O'Donnel Royal Logistic Corps from Edinburgh. He leaves a wife and 4 children. He was previously awarded the George Medal for bravery in Iraq.
